    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply and efficiently producing monosaccharides from a sugar polymer such as cellulose, and to provide a method for producing bio-ethanol from the resultant monosaccharides. SOLUTION: An ionic liquid composed of a cation having a quaternary nitrogen atom and a chloride ion is brought into contact with the sugar polymer, e.g. the cellulose in the presence of water, and at least one selected from among an acid, a nucleophilic agent, and an amine quaternary salt, or in the presence of the water, and under acidic conditions of pH≤7 to break down the sugar polymer and to provide the monosaccharide such as glucose. The resultant monosaccharide is then separated from the ionic liquid by an ion exchange method, and subsequently fermented to afford the ethanol. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
