摘要： Provided are a metal supported catalyst having excellent catalytic activity and durability, a battery electrode, and a battery. The metal supported catalyst contains a carbon support, and a catalyst metal particle supported by the carbon support. In a photoelectron spectrum obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the metal supported catalyst exhibits peaks that are separated into first to sixth nitrogen atom peaks having peak tops respectively within the ranges of (1) 398.6 ± 0.2eV, (2) 399.5 ± 0.3eV, (3) 400.5 ± 0.2eV, (4) 401.3 ± 0.3eV, (5) 403.4 ± 0.4eV, and (6) 404.5 ± 0.5eV, as peaks derived from the nitrogen atom 1s orbital. As measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the ratio of the second nitrogen atom peak surface area over the total of the (1) to (6) nitrogen atom peak surface areas, is 0.03 or higher. As measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the ratio of the second nitrogen atom concentration over the carbon atom concentration is 0.0005 or higher.

This carbon catalyst comprises: a carbon structure which has a nitrogen desorption amount of 0.75 × 10-5 mol/g or more over the range from 800°C to 1,000°C or a nitrogen desorption amount of 1.20 × 10-5 mol/g or more over the range from 600°C to 1,000°C as determined by a programmed-temperature desorption method that determines the nitrogen desorption amount over the range from 600°C to 1,000°C; a carbon structure which has a pH of 9.2 or more at the isoelectric point of the zeta potential; or a carbon structure which has a ratio of the intensity of a first nitrogen peak that has a peak top within the binding energy range of 398.0 ± 1.0 eV to the intensity of a second nitrogen peak that has a peak top within the binding energy range of 400.5 ± 1.0 eV of 0.620 or more, said peaks being obtained by separating peaks ascribed to the 1s orbital of a nitrogen atom in the photoelectron spectrum obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
