    • PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetostriction measuring member which has large accepting torque and shows high sensitivity to the magnetostriction by providing a specific band-shaped thick layer in the outer periphery of a steel shaft material made of carbon steel or alloy steel. CONSTITUTION:The magnetostriction measuring member uses a steel shaft material made of carbon steel or alloy steel. For the carbon steel, SC material, S-CK material, etc., is employed. For the alloy steel, e.g. SCr material, SMn material or the like which is a kind of steel for mechanical structure is used. A band-shaped thick layer formed of Fe-Al alloy containing 1-50wt.% Al is provided on the surface of the shaft material. If the content of Al is too small, the hysteresis is greatly varied when the torque is detected. Therefore, the content, of Al is set to be not smaller than 5wt.% Moreover, if Al is contained too much, the sensitivity is lowered, and therefore the content should be 15wt.% or lower so as to increase the detecting sensitivity. When the band-shaped thick layer is too thick, it cracks, and therefore, the band-shaped layer is 3mm thick or thinner. Further, if the layer is too hard, it also generates cracks, and therefore the layer is adapted to have Vickers hardness Hv=420 or smaller.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent high magnetostrictive material from cracking when a high magnetostrictive material is united metallographically on the surface of a shaft body to be measured or when the shaft body is subjected to tempering, e.g. quenching, in order to elevate the yield point. CONSTITUTION:The torque detector 1 comprises a shaft 2 to be measured, exciting means, i.e., coils 6a, 6b, for forming a magnetic circuit partially passing through the shaft 2, and detecting means, i.e., coils 6a, 6b, for detecting magnetostrictive components of the shaft 2. The shaft 2 has a body 2a made of such material as exhibiting high yield point through tempering and a high magnetostrictive material 2b is united metallographically on the surface of the body 2a. Uniting interface of the body 2a and the high magnetostrictive material 2b on the axial cross-section of the shaft 2 is formed while inclining at least the opposite ends 2c, 2d in the axial direction and magnetically anisotropic profile parts 5a, 5b are provided at least at the high magnetostrictive material 2b part of the shaft 2.
