摘要： PURPOSE:To form a coating layer of uniform thickness on the outer periphery of a glass fiber without causing flaws on the surface of the glass fiber due to the contact accidents, etc., by passing the glass fiber through a coating material prepared in the form of a liquid droplet or liquid film by the surface tension thereof. CONSTITUTION:A rod-like base material (10a) for glass is spun into, an optical fiber or glass fiber (10b), e.g. a capillary tube, by a heating furnace 1, passed through a liquid droplet material (11a) of a coating material 11, fed from a storage tank 7 of a coating apparatus 6, and kept at the tip of a feed capillary 8 and then heat-treated in a curing or drying heating furnace 2 to give a primarily coated fiber (10c). The resultant coated fiber (10c) is then passed through a high polymeric coating material 12 in a coating tank 3 having a die 4 and heat-treated in a curing heating furnace 5 to afford the secondarily coated fiber (10d). The coating material 11 to be kept in the feed capillary 8 may be formed in a liquid film, and the glass fiber (10b) may be passed perpendicularly through the liquid film. A surfactant, releasing agent, high polymer, etc. may be used if necessary as the coating material 11.

摘要： PURPOSE:To lessen the change in diameter of line and piping loss of a connected rod, by facing the end faces of a pair of preform rods having approximately same diameters with a given interval, heating the rods to make the central parts at higher temperature than the surrounding parts, placing one face opposite another, connecting them. CONSTITUTION:A pair of preform rods 10a and 10b having approximately same diameters consisting of the core parts 11a and 11b and the clad parts 12a and 12b are placed with a given interval in such a way that the end faces 13a and 13b are faced each other. The rotating heating body 17 equipped with the heat source 15 and the ring heater 16 set symmetrically with respect to the rotating shaft 14 is placed between the end faces 13a and 13b, the heat source 15 is operated, the central parts of the rods 10a and 10b are heated and made at higher temperature than the surrounding parts. The shaft 14 is rotated, the heater 16 is placed on the outer periphery side between the rods 10a and 10b, the rods 10a and 10b are placed opposite the shaft, and the connecting parts are heated by the heater 16. In the operation, the heating temperature of the heater 16 is set a little lower than that of the heat source 15.

CONSTITUTION:The end faces of quartz preform rods 1, 2 are polished, butted coaxially, and welded together. The connected preform rods are covered with a quartz pipe 3 to obtain a solid primary preform. The primary preform is heated in a carbon furnace and drawn to make the final preform, which is spun to an optical fiber.

CONSTITUTION:In forming a coating lyer for preventing damage on the periphery, an optical fiber (B) obtained by spinning a preform rod (A) is passed through a coating bath 2. A liquid coating material 20, e.g. a rubber or plastic, containing a curing agent is introduced from a supply path 8 into the bottom tank part 6 of the coating bath 2 under pressure, led from a gap 19 of a die 18 constitued of the top die (18a) and the botttom die (18b) to the upper tank part 5 of the coating bath 2 and circulated through an opening 12 and circulating path 9. The optical fiber (B) is held at the center of the die 18 in passing through the die 18 by the pressure of the coating solution flowing through a gap 19 and the top die (18a) to form a coating layer of uniform thickness without damage in contact with the die 18, dried and cured in a furnace 3.

This strain of elongation should be held invariably constant so as to secure the strength. For the purpose, the distance OO' between two positions of the moving roll 4 is made variable. The intermittent movement of the moving roll 4 and the stopping of the rollers 2a and 2b are repeated to secure the strain of elongation over the entire section of the optical fiber.

摘要： PURPOSE:To reduce deterioration in strength during screening while evading the curvature of an optical fiber to be tested by holding the optical fiber linear and applying a tensile force. CONSTITUTION:A feeder 2 feeds the optical fiber 1 and a take-up device 3 takes up the optical fiber 1; and a couple of rolls 4a and 4b are arranged with rotating surfaces in contact, and the optical fiber 1 is run between those rotating surfaces. When the strength of the optical fiber 1 is checked, the take-up speed v2 is set larger than the feed speed v1 so as to tense the optical fiber 1 between both devices 2 and 3. The resulting tensile force depends upon the difference DELTAv=v2-v1 between both speeds, so a mechanism for adjusting the difference DELTAv is incorporated in a tensile force measuring instrument 5 to adjust the tensile force.

Air or a clean gas such as N2 is sprayed on the vicinities of the inlet 2 and the outlet 3 from nozzles 7, 8 through spray pipes 9, 10, respectively, and by allowing gaseous currents C1 to flow along the periphery of the material A from the upward nozzles 7 and gaseous currents C2 to flow along the periphery of the fiber B from the downward nozzles 8, the inlet 2 and the outlet 3 are sealed. By the sealing effect the consumption of the inert gas is reduced, and impurities are prevented from entering from the outside.

Its free end is introduced into the heating furnace 3, heated at a given temperature, the starting point of drawing is set at a higher position than the joined part of the rods 2, and drawing is started, to give simultaneously optical fibers wherein the optical fiber stocks 4 not melted and jointed are collected in high density.
