    • A smelting reduction apparatus for producing a molten metal under a slag by charging a metal raw material, a carbon material and a flux into a furnace having a rectangular horizontal section, and blowing oxygen and/or oxygen-enriched gas into the slag through lower tuyeres provided in the furnace side walls and a method for operating the same are improved. An inert gas is blown into the molten metal through bottom tuyeres provided near the center in the shorter side direction of the furnace bottom to ensure agitation of the slag near the center in the shorter side direction. An inert gas is blown into the slag through lowest tuyeres which are provided in the furnace side wall portions below the lower tuyeres and not lower than the interface between the slag and the molten metal and directed at a downward angle of 0 to 45 DEG from the horizontal direction and the slag directly above the molten metal is thus stirred, so that the relative speed between the slag and the molten metal is increased and the quantity of heat transfer from the slag to the molten metal is increased. The lower tuyeres are directed in the lateral direction from the direction vertical to the longer sides of the furnace at an angle of 15 to 45 DEG toward the direction opposite to that to a raw material charging inlet, so that the slag is also allowed to flow in the longer side direction of the furnace.
