摘要： PURPOSE:To efficiently remove sulfate with a simple operation by fractionating and removing the sulfate from an alkaline metal chloride-contg. liquid of a lowered concn. discharged from an electrolytic cell by using an amphoteric ion exchanger. CONSTITUTION:The raw salt of the alkaline metal chloride, dissolving water, the fractionating liquid from which the sulfate is removed and dilute brine are supplied to the electrolysis cell 1 where satd. brine is prepd. This liquid is introduced into the electrolytic cell 7 and is electrolyzed to form caustic alkali and gaseous hydrogen. The dilute brine remaining after the electrolysis is partly fed via a dechlorinating column 13 into a separating vessel 15 packed with the amphoteric ion exchanger having an anion exchange group and cation exchange group. The alkaline metal chloride is adsorbed to this amphoteric ion exchanger and thereafter, the dissolving water is passed to discharge the outflow fractionating liquid contg. the sulfate outside the system via an outflow pipe 17. The outflow fractionating liquid contg. the alkaline metal chloride is then circulated via a conduit 4 to the dissolving vessel 1. As a result, the sulfate is removed without using special chemicals.

SOLUTION: A stage for adsorbing or decomposing and removing the residual chlorine in the dilute brine discharged from the dechlorinating stage is provided between the dechlorinating stage and demirabiliting stage, the dilute brine discharged from the demirabiliting stage is divided into two parts, 3-50% of the dilute brine is introduced into the stage for adsorbing or decomposing and removing the residual chlorine, and the remainder is circulated directly to the saturated brine preparing stage.

An aqueous solution of alkali metal chloride containing alkali metal hydroxide and alkali metal chlorate, which is by produced in the production of chlorine and hydrogen, is passed through the column 1 to be caught by the amphoteric ion exchanger. The change in the concentration of a component in liquid from the column 1, which is detected by a detector 5 comprising a conductivity meter or a refractometer, etc., is transmitted to valves 7a, 7b so that an outflow fraction containing alkali metal chloride is extracted from an outflow pipe 8a, while an outflow fraction containing mainly alkali metal chlorate is extracted from an outflow pipe 8b.
