摘要： Cyclic ethers having 3 to 6 C atoms in the ring are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst system comprising the non-volatile residue from thermal cracking of an aluminium halide etherate. Numerous examples of cyclic ethers containing 3, 4, 5 and 6 C atoms per ring are given. Bulk polymerization and solution polymerization techniques are also described. Examples 1-4 describe the polymerization of epichlorohydrin using the non-volatile residue from AlCl3.Et2O. Examples 5-8 describe the polymerization of propylene oxide in the presence of a similar catalyst, the latter also being used to polymerize 3:3-bis(chloromethyl)-oxacyclobutane, tetrahydrofuran, 1:3-dioxolane and trioxane.ALSO:Polymerisation catalysts comprise the non-volatile residue from thermal cracking of an aluminium halide etherate. The major constituent of such catalysts is Al O X where X is a halogen. Other constituents are Al X3, Al2O3 and Al(OR)3 where X is halogen and R is alkyl. The catalysts may be associated compounds which produce carbonium ions or oxoinium ions with Lewis acids, numerous examples of which are given.
