    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly safe sodium-sulfur cell equipped with a mechanism to separate in advance sulfur and sodium so as not to cause a direct reaction of them, even when an active material is leaked by a cleavage of pressure release part due to an abnormal internal pressure. SOLUTION: In a sodium-sulfur cell which is structured by a cylindrical positive electrode mold impregnated with sulfur 12 being a positive active material, a positive electrode container 3 for housing the positive electrode mold, an insulator ring 2 for connecting the positive electrode container 3 and a negative electrode fitting 4, a solid electrolyte tube 5 having a cylindrical shape with bottom connected to the inner periphery of the insulator ring 2, and by housing sodium 7 being negative active material in an internal space formed by the solid electrolyte tube 5 and the negative electrode fitting 4, an external container 15 having a bottomed cylindrical shape for housing the positive electrode 3 and to discharge sulfur released from a cleaved pressure releasing part 14 is disposed as well as forming the pressure releasing part 14 in a part of the positive electrode container 3, which is cleaved by an abnormal internal pressure.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain sodium and sulphur from directly acting with each other when a solid electrolyte tube is damaged, also design the joint of an insulating ring with a positive electrode container or the solid electrolyte tube so as not to be damaged, and process a bulkhead so as to be deformed for controlling a clearance at a specified value between the solid electrolyte tube and the bulkhead. SOLUTION: A solid electrolyte tube 4 in a closed top shape which is opened at its lower surface, is disposed by way of an insulating ring 2 in the inside of a positive electrode container 1 in a closed top shape, which is opened at its lower surface, a cylindrical bulkhead 8 opened at its upper and lower surfaces, is disposed in the inner side of the solid electrolyte tube 4 to be turned out a negative electrode chamber R1, furthermore, a sodium container 5 is disposed in the inner side of the bulkhead 8, the outer circumferential part at the lower end of the bulkhead 8 is joined with the insulating ring 2, concurrently, a negative electrode lid 3 is mounted to the lower end part of the bulkhead 8 so as to allow the lower surface of the negative electrode chamber R1 to be blocked, and a deformation permissible space 10 is provided for the upper part of a positive electrode chamber R2, which permits the amount of deformation to be made based on the difference in thermal expansion between the positive electrode container 1 and the solid electrolyte tube 4.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the applying of excess stress to a heat pressure joint of a cathode container with an insulating ring or a glass soldering joint of the insulating ring with a solid electrolyte tube even after repeating of temperature rising and falling of a battery to avoid possible breakage of the joint. CONSTITUTION:A rigid control body 11 whose lower end is liked on the bottom surface of a cathode container 1 and upper end controls movement in the upper direction of an insulating ring 3 caused by heating of the cathode container 1 is arranged on the outside of the cathode container 1. After temperature rising and falling of a battery were repeated, when temperature is lowered from operating temperature to room temperature, coefficient of thermal expansion of the control body 11 is set so as not to apply the force to the insulating ring. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the control body 11 is set in the range of 9mu10 -18.7X10 / deg.C and further in the range between the freezing temperature of sulfur and the operation temperature of the battery but so that the lower limit is in the coefficient of thermal expansion of a solid electrolyte tube and the upper limit is in the coefficient of thermal expansion determined by a specified equation.
