    • An apparatus for electrolytically etching a workpiece comprises means for interrupting a power source quickly when an abnormal phenomenon occurs, and means for accurately detecting an abnormal current attenuation occuring between an electrode and a workpiece. In the apparatus for electrolytically etching a workpiece, a saturable reactor constant voltage automatic controlling system is employed for the electrolytic etching power source, and in order to decrease the size of an interrupting thyristor and to complete the interrupting of the working current; an interrupting diode is inserted between the saturable reactor, a stepdown transformer and a three phase full wave rectification, and the interrupting thyristor is connected to the output and is turned on by an abnormal phenomenon detecting signal so that the feed to the workpiece and the electrode is stopped by a short circuit of the three phase alternating current between the saturable reactor and the stepdown transformer. The abnormal phenomenon occuring between the electrode and the workpiece in the electrolytic etching, is detected by employing a sample and hold circuit, an operational amplifier and a logic circuit to prevent damage to the electrode and the workpiece. Further, an apparatus for electrolytically etching a workpiece wherein an abnormal current attenuation is detected with high accuracy is provided so that the ripple component of the working power source due to a spark or voltage change component caused by electrical noise and spark, is detected with high accuracy.

    • A process for shaping a workpiece using an electrical discharge and an apparatus for practicing the process is disclosed. According to the process, a workpiece is shaped by intermittently impressing a voltage pulse across a working gap between the workpiece and an appropriately shaped electrode. The process includes the step of controlling the duration of the electrical discharge in the working gap in accordance with operating conditions in the working gap to control the average current flow. The apparatus includes a control circuit having a capacitor circuit which controls the duration of the current discharge depending directly upon the time during which the no-load voltage exists in the working gap.

    • A circuit for an electroerosive etching apparatus is disclosed which includes first and second direct current sources controlled by first and second switching circuits, respectively. The first switching circuit includes a plurality of switching elements, all of which are connected in parallel to facilitate the delivery of large currents and a pulse source for controlling the switching elements. The second switching circuit may include only one switching element, and is designed to supply only small currents. In operation, the first and second switching circuits initially cooperate to apply a potential nearly equal to the combined potentials of the two direct current sources across a working gap. Once a discharge is achieved using this high potential, the second switching circuit is automatically cut off, leaving the first switching circuit operative to supply the large current needed in the etching operation. A protective circuit is also included to prevent damage of the first switching circuit due to overloading.

    • A method and apparatus for shaping a workpiece by electrical discharge, the workpiece being shaped by a shaping electrode by intermittently impressing a voltage pulse across a working gap formed between the workpiece and the shaping electrode. The apparatus comprises a means for efficiently controlling the duration of a discharge across the working gap according to a condition dependent upon a no-load voltage impressing period, i.e., the period of operation beginning with the impression of the voltage pulse and ending with the occurrence of a discharge, and further according to the state of the working gap detected in terms of a processing voltage mean value. When a no-load voltage impressing period is inside a given interval, the duration of a discharge is increased according to the length of the period. Alternatively, when the no-load voltage impressing period is outside the given interval, the duration of a discharge corresponding to the state of the working gap is not increased. Accordingly, operating stability is improved and electrode consumption is minimized.
