    • An omnidirectional borehole navigation system is provided that includes a housing that can be placed within the smaller diameter drill pipes used towards the bottom of a borehole, an outer gimbal connected to the housing, and at least two or more stacked inner gimbals that are nested in and connected to the outer gimbal, the inner gimbals each having an axis parallel to one another and perpendicular to the outer gimbal. The inner gimbals contain electronic circuits, gyros whose input axes span three dimensional space, and accelerometers whose input axes span three dimensional space. There are an outer gimbal drive system, an inner gimbal drive system for maintaining the gyro input axes and the accelerometer input axes as substantially orthogonal triads, and a processor responsive to the gyro circuits and the accelerometer circuits to determine the attitude and the position of the housing in the borehole.

    • A seam forming apparatus for forming a full felled seam at one lateral edge of each of two limp material segments establishes a specific geometrical relationship between the segments. The apparatus includes a fold assembly which extends along a reference axis from an input end to an output end. The fold assembly constrains portions of said first and second segments adjacent to the lateral edge to be substantially adjacent and substantially straight in the direction transverse to the reference axis at points near the input end of the fold assembly. Those portions are constrained to be substantially V-shaped in the direction transverse to the reference axis and oppositely-directed and interleaved at points outside and near the output end of the fold assembly. Between the input and output ends, those portions are constrained to be substantially adjacent and substantially Z-shaped in the direction transverse to the reference axis.

    • The invention is an apparatus for transporting a limp material segment, such as cloth, along a reference axis parallel to a planar work surface. The apparatus includes a base member positioned above a work surface. A four-bar linkage assembly couples a segment coupling assembly to the base member. The four-bar linkage assembly includes first and second elongated bar assemblies, each being pivotally coupled to the base member. The length of the second bar assembly is controllable within a predetermined range. A third elongated bar assembly is pivotally coupled at a first end to the segment coupling assembly, at a second end to the second bar assembly, and at an intermediate point to the first bar assembly. In addition, the apparatus includes a rotary actuator for selectively rotating the second bar assembly about a pivot axis extending through its point of connection to the base member. When the second bar assembly is in its retracted state, as that assembly is rotated by the rotary actuator, the segment coupling assembly travels along a substantially straight path substantially parallel and adjacent to the reference axis. Furthermore, when the second bar assembly is in its extended state, as the second bar assembly is rotated by the actuator, the coupling member travels in a non-straight path.
