A sinker operating cam mechanism (10) installed in a carriage acts on the butt (12c) of a sinker jack (12) to move the sinker jack (12) backward from a mouth part (2) so that the acting part (8c) of the movable sinker (8) can retract from the mouth part (2). The sinker jack (12) is locked to a moved back position by a locking mechanism (16). Since a wire (17) passed through a needle plate (5) is utilized to lock the sinker jack (12) in the locking mechanism (16), the locking mechanism (16) can be reduced in size. To lock the sinker jack (12) to the wire (17), the sinker jack (12) comprises a projection (12f).
