    • A safety gear for an elevator, in which the safety gear housing is mounted on the frame using transverse bars or the like. To prevent accidental gripping of the wedges when the elevator car moves laterally, the safety gear housing is allowed to move laterally along the bars. The safety gear is provided with guiding means placed on either side of the guide rail so that the clearance between them and the guide rail is smaller than the clearance between the wedge and the guide rail. Thus, when the lateral displacements of the frame of the elevator car relative to the guide rail exceeds the distance between the guiding means and the guide rail, the safety gear housing is moved laterally and a minimum distance between the wedge and the guide rail is maintained, said minimum distance being at least equal to the difference between said clearances.

    • A torque-responsive brake, in particular for elevators, comprises two or more brakes arcs, brake shoes pivotally connected to the brake arcs and having attached brake linings and a brake actuating mechanism for pressing the brake linings against a drum. With prior art brakes, the starting of the elevator was not smooth enough or, alternatively, the types of apparatus by which smooth starting has been achieved were too complicated and expensive. By the present invention these drawbacks have been overcome in that, for pivotally attaching each brake shoe to its brake arc, a pivot shaft extends through the respective brake shoe and is connected to one end of a torque-responsive member, the opposite end of which is fixed to the respective brake arc.

    • Traction sheave elevator has a drive machine (1) and, coupled with it, a traction sheave (3) provided with a rope groove (2), the hoisting rope (4) running over the traction sheave, an elevator car (6) and its counterweight (7) suspended on the hoisting rope and moving in an elevator shaft (6). The elevator uses at least two diverting pulleys (8,9) which causes the hoisting rope going to the traction sheave (3) and the hoisting rope coming from the traction sheave (3) to run crosswise with respect to each other. The diverting pulleys and the traction sheave are placed so that the planes of rotation of the diverting pulleys (8,9) lie on different sides of the plane of rotation of the traction sheave (3).
