For example, in one embodiment the Rake receiver circuit comprises one or more processing circuits that are configured to generate Rake combining weights in a first mode of operation as first combining weights calculated from channel estimates corresponding to a set of Rake signal fingers. In a second mode, the processing circuit(s) generate the Rake combining weights as compensated combining weights obtained by compensating the first combining weights with second combining weights calculated from colored interference estimates corresponding to a set of Rake probing fingers.

    • Methods and apparatus are described for estimating a path-loss difference between uplink and downlink communications at a first node communicating with a second node in a communication system. A quantity of access request preambles transmitted by the first node to the second node before an acknowledgement from the second node of successful receipt of a preamble is received at the first node is determined. A difference between an uplink path-loss attributed to communications from the first node to the second node and a downlink path-loss attributed to communications to the first node from the second node is estimated based on the transmitted preamble quantity determination. Once the path-loss difference is estimated, the estimate can be used for many purposes, such as to determine a transmission power of the first node.

    • The automatic frequency correction value applied by a receiver is altered to minimize long-term drift of a path delay profile. In one embodiment, the phase or timing error resulting from constant frequency corrections is accumulated, and an estimated frequency correction value is selectively quantized into an actual frequency correction value in response to the accumulated phase/timing error. The quantized value above or below the estimate is selected to minimize the accumulated phase/timing error that gives rise to path delay profile drift. In another embodiment, a timing circuit measures the instantaneous path delay profile drift incurred with each frequency correction, and integrates the instantaneous drift measurements over time to yield a path delay profile drift. The drift (or its rate of change) is then used to adjust a frequency correction value so as to minimize the drift.

    • A method for generating a power control command in a transceiver in a wireless communication system, where the method comprises the steps of calculating, at the beginning of a predefined time period, a quality measure reference value, generating, repeatedly during the predefined time period, an estimated quality measure value of a signal received at the transceiver; generating a power control command in dependence of the estimated quality measure value and the quality measure reference value; and generating, a number of times during the predefined time period, a modified quality measure reference value from the quality measure reference value. The step of generating the power control command comprises comparing the estimated quality measure value with the modified quality measure reference value. A power control unit, comprising a quality measure estimator, a calculator, a first controller, a second controller and an inner loop element, is configured to implement the method.
