摘要： An organic electroluminescent device is disclosed which is protected from dark spot formation. The device is comprised of, in sequence, a support, an anode, an organic electroluminescent medium, and a cathode. The cathode is comprised of an electron injecting layer contacting the organic electroluminescent medium containing a plurality of metals at least one of which has a work function of less than that of indium. The cathode is comprised of a layer of fused metal particles containing at least 80 percent of indium and having a mean diameter of less the 1 .mu.m and a coefficient of variation of less than 20 percent.

摘要： A multicolor image display device includes an array consisting of a plurality of light emitting pixels arranged in two intersecting sets of parallel files, the pixels in a first set of parallel files forming columns and the pixels in a second set of parallel files forming rows on a common electrically insulative light transmissive support. The pixels in each file of one of the first or second set of parallel files contain and are joined by a common light transmissive first electrode overlying and laterally spaced on the support; an organic electroluminescent medium overlies the first electrode, and the pixels in each file of the other of the first or second set of parallel files contain and are joined by a laterally spaced common second electrode. The device, which is capable of producing multicolor image display, is further characterized in that each pixel in the first set of parallel files is divided into at least two sub-pixels, the electroluminescent medium in each of the sub-pixels being capable of emitting light of a different hue; parallel walls of a height exceeding the thickness of the electroluminescent medium and capable of shadowing adjacent sub-pixels are positioned between the sub-pixels, and each of the sub-pixels contains and is joined by an element of the first or second electrode.

The device is comprised of, in sequence, a support, an anode, an organic electroluminescent medium, and a cathode containing a plurality of metals other than alkali metals. The cathode is comprised of a capping layer containing at least one alkaline earth or rare earth metal and, interposed between the capping layer and the organic electroluminescent medium, an electron injecting layer containing at least one metal having a work function of less than 4.0, but exhibiting a higher work function than the alkaline earth or rare earth metals in the capping layer.
