    • A cowl latching system provides a retainer that is attached to the outboard motor and a catch device which is attached to a cowl structure. The catch device is shaped to allow the retainer to move between first and second extension portions. The retainer is provided with first and second retention members that can each move from a retracted position to an extended position under the urging of a resilient member such as a spring. The first and second retention members can also be urged from their respective extended positions to their respective retracted positions by the movement of the first and second extension portions of the catch device when the cowl structure is installed unto the outboard motor. The arrangement of the catch device and retainer simplifies the installation and removal of the cowl structure from the outboard motor by allowing the operator of a marine vessel to more easily and simply move the cowl structure relative to the stationary components of the outboard motor during both the installation and removal procedures.

    • An apparatus and method generates a shaped transition between the minimum and maximum output power levels of a transmitter (500). When the transmitter is turned on a stepped transition (415) is generated at the beginning (3) of the transition region (409) followed by a shaped transition (417) to the end (6) of the transition region (409). When the transmitter (500) is turned off a shaped transition region (417') is generated at the beginning (162) of the transition region (411) followed by a stepped transition (415') at the end (3) of the transition region (411). The stepped transition (415 or 415') is generated by adjusting a voltage controlled attenuator (545) and the bias of a power amplifier (545) in the transmitter (500). The shaped transition (417 or 417') is generated by processing transmitted information through finite impulse response filters (507 or 509) before or after the time slot permitted for transmitting information.

    • A rigging apparatus is provided for an outboard motor in which an attachment member is shaped to be rigidly attached to a housing structure, or cowl, of an outboard motor, without the need for additional hardware such as clamps, brackets, or screws. The attachment member is shaped to receive a threaded sleeve in threaded association therewith so that hoses, wires, and cables can be protected within the threaded sleeve. An attachment member of the rigging apparatus is made to be asymmetrical to avoid improper assembly into an opening of the housing structure of an outboard motor.

    • A waveform encoding method and device provide for generating/receiving a power efficient binary intensity modulated optical data signal from a binary source signal which minimizes a time between adjacent pulse transitions and maximizes a pulse peak amplitude for transmission over a low-power wireless infrared link. In generating the signal, the method includes: generating a Q-ary pulse position modulation, Q-PPM, encoded data signal from binary data where Q represents 2.sup.L time slots and L is a predetermined integer representing a predetermined number of binary source bits of the power efficient binary intensity modulated optical data signal; generating an efficient binary intensity modulated signal by increasing the pulse peak amplitude of the Q-PPM encoded data signal by a factor of k, k a predetermined value, and decreasing a pulse width of the Q-PPM encoded data signal by k; and transmitting the efficient binary intensity modulated signal over the low-power wireless infrared link.
