摘要： A light-modulation element is disclosed which comprises a cholesteric liquid crystalline medium sandwiched between two opposing substrates, and an electrode arrangement for applying an electric field substantially perpendicular to the substrates. The cholesteric (chiral-nematic) liquid crystal exhibits the flexoelectric effect and is aligned in the uniformly lying helix (ULH) structure. One of the substrates is provided with a planar (i.e. homogeneous) alignment layer adjacent to the cholesteric liquid crystalline medium and the other substrate is provided with a homeotropic alignment layer. This arrangement provides for an intrinsically stable alignment which allows a high quality dark state to be achieved. The liquid crystal medium comprises at least one bimesogenic compound and at least one chiral compound. The light-modulation element can be used in various types of optical devices: displays, non-linear optical devices, and optical information storage devices.
