    • Methods and apparatus for generating and distributing watermarked content are described. Content to be distributed is sliced into a plurality of segments, e.g., short portions. Individual segments are subjected to watermarking with multiple watermarked versions of a segment being generated. Different watermarked versions of a segment communicate different information, e.g., one or more numbers. Sets of watermarked segments corresponding to a program are supplied to a content distribution device. Based on a session number or other information corresponding to the destination of the content, the content distribution device selects watermarked segments from the sets of segments to provide to the user. The combination of segments communicates, via the watermarks, a sequence of numbers used to identify the streamed content without requiring the distribution node to perform image processing to generate the watermarks. When the segments are communicated sequentially, the watermarks can be detected and the identifying numerical sequence extracted.

One or more regional headends broadcast base channel maps. Set top boxes request base channel map enhancement information from a server which may service multiple regions, e.g., regions corresponding to different head ends. The channel map server dynamically generates base channel map enhancement information, or identifies previously generated base channel map enhancement information, based on one or more business policy rules applicable to the individual set top box requesting the update channel map enhancement information. The channel map server may be implemented nationally or covering multiple regions, and customization of channel maps for set top boxes can be implemented on customer, business or even an individual set top box basis based on business policy rules.

    • A method for an integrated status transponder using the modulation of a return laser dithering signal. This invention provides a method for transmitting an optical node monitoring signal corresponding to error detection parameters over an optical network extending from a transmission site to a receiver. A stabilizing RF signal and the optical node monitoring signal based on error detection parameters are modulated to generate an “intelligent” integrated signal. The integrated signal and the principal RF signal used for various services are sent in conjunction over an optical network to a receiving site. The integrated and principal RF signals are received from the optical network by a receiver. Start and device identification bits can be used to identify the monitoring signal and to specify a downstream destination device.
