    • A display apparatus for selectively controlling the illumination of two dependent visual indicators with a single control line. The apparatus includes two visual indicators, two amplifiers, and a logic circuit. The same end of the two visual indicators connect to a conductive terminal. A first amplifier connects between the line and the other end of one indicator and a second amplifier connects between the line and the other end of the other indicator. A combination of signals applied to the two inputs selectively illuminates one or both indicators with one signal from the control line. The inventive circuit designs of the present invention are compact in size, elegant in its simplicity and operation, and miserly in its power consumption. Therefore, a minimal amount of power will be used to highly illuminate one or two visual indicators being dependent on one another with the use of a single control pin of an IC.

    • Techniques are disclosed for converting available electrical power to desirable electrical power. One embodiment of the techniques calls for a boost circuit to convert low power Win at a terminal TVin to high power Wout at a terminal TVout. The boost circuit includes a voltage generation circuit, a capacitor Cstore, a timing-control generator, and a boost regulator. The voltage generation circuit converts voltage Vin at terminal TVin to voltage Vstore at a terminal TVstore wherein, in one embodiment, Vstore is less than Vin. Further, the current Icharge provided by the voltage generation circuit at terminal TVstore is less than the current Iin at terminal TVin. In one embodiment, capacitor Cstore, being charged by current Icharge, stores necessary charge to provide appropriate currents and voltages to the boost regulator. The timing-control generator uses voltages Vin and Vstore to provide a timing-control signal Tcontrol, which controls the timing operation of the boost regulator. In one embodiment, Tcontrol resets the boost regulator until capacitor Cstore accumulates enough charge to provide appropriate power to the load at terminal Tvout through the boost regulator. The boost regulator, when in operation, converts Vstore to Vout.

    • A highly manufacturable low cost DC-to-DC power converter uses a control circuit constructed from a '555 type timer IC and a precision voltage reference. The output of the '555 timer is used to drive a MOSFET transistor that alternately energizes and de-energizes a primary winding of a transformer, thereby energizing secondary windings of the transformer. The voltage at the secondary windings is rectified and filtered to form the regulated output supply voltages. A feedback control signal is generated based on a difference between a reference voltage and the a regulated output supply voltage. Based on the feedback control signal, a control window is established within the '555 timer that determines the charging and discharging times of a capacitor. Since the charging and discharging times of the capacitor are exponential, changing the feedback control signal changes the control window, which in turn changes the charging time with respect to the discharging time. While the times change with respect to each other, the sum of the charging time and the discharging time remains relatively constant, so the oscillation frequency remains relatively constant. Accordingly, the present invention achieves pulse width modulation (PWM) type control at a cost much lower than the cost of commercially available controller ICs.
