    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining time difference of arrival (TDOA) and/or frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) to limit frequency and time period for examining presence of the signal to be located. SOLUTION: A method, used for locating a mobile transmitter, includes providing a set of cross-correlation values, wherein each cross-correlation value is associated with a corresponding value of the TDOA and/or FDOA estimate and is produced by cross-correlating a reference signal with a cooperating signal (Fig.5, not shown). The reference signal comprises a copy of a signal transmitted by the mobile transmitter as received at a first antenna and the cooperating signal comprises a copy of the same signal as received at a second antenna. The method further includes determining a most likely range of TDOA and/or FDOA estimates, and then identifying an optimal cross-correlation value within a subset (Fig.10) of cross-correlation values corresponding to the most likely range of TDOA and/or FDOA estimates.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining arrival time difference and/or arrival frequency difference to limit a frequency and a time period for testing the existence of a location detection object signal.SOLUTION: A method used when detecting the location of a mobile transmitter includes to calculate a set of cross correlation values, corresponding TDOA and/or FDOA estimate values are associated with each cross correlation value, and each cross correlation value is calculated by correlating a reference signal with a cooperation signal (Fig. 5). The reference signal is composed of a copy of a signal transmitted by the mobile transmitter and received by a first antenna, and the cooperation signal is composed of a copy of the same signal received by a second antenna. The method further includes to determine a maximum likelihood range of TDOA and/or FDOA estimate values and then, to specify an optimum cross correlation value in a subset (Fig. 10) of cross correlation values corresponding to the maximum likelihood range of the TDOA and/or FDOA estimate values. Next, the TDOA and/or FDOA values corresponding to the optimum cross correlation value are used to calculate the location of the mobile transmitter.

SOLUTION: This method comprises specifying a received transmission as requiring multiple pass location processing, whereby the WLS determines a first, lower quality location estimate and then subsequently determines a second, higher quality location estimate. The WLS then determines the first location estimate, provides it to a first location application, and then determines the second location estimate.
