    • A method and an apparatus for grinding an axial workpiece are provided, which are capable of removing a turning lead portion of an axial workpiece having an oil seal fit portion on its outer circumferential surface by grinding without any grinding fluid. The apparatus for grinding an axial workpiece includes: a headstock of a lathe for rotatably supporting an axial workpiece about its axis, the workpiece having an oil seal fit portion on its outer circumferential surface; a slide mount disposed so as to be radially movable with respect to a tool turret of the lathe; an air cylinder for moving the slide mount back and forth in alignment with the axis of the headstock; an elastic grinding stone wheel rotatably attached to the slide mount to be movable radially back and forth with respect to the oil seal fit portion by the slide mount being moved; and a brushless motor for rotating the elastic grinding stone wheel.

    • In cutting the braking surface of a brake rotor-equipped wheel bearing device, which includes an outer member having a car body attaching flange in the outer periphery, an inner member having a wheel attaching flange in the outer periphery, a plurality of rows of rolling bodies incorporated between the two members and rotatably supporting the inner member, and a brake rotor attached to the wheel attaching flange, the cutting is performed such that subsequently to assembling the wheel bearing device in its mounted state, the end surface of a wheel pilot formed in the inner member is finish-cut. The brake rotor is then attached to the wheel attaching flange, whereupon the braking surface of the brake rotor is cut with the outer diameter of the wheel pilot gripped relative to the end surface of the wheel pilot.

    • A cutting method which can efficiently cut braking surfaces of a brake rotor of a wheel bearing assembly. A reference surface on one side of a vehicle body-mounting flange provided on an outer member of the wheel bearing assembly is brought into abutment with positioning pieces of a positioning member, and a cylindrical outer peripheral surface of the outer member is clamped by a chuck device. By advancing pushrods of first and second pressing devices, a raceway member and a hub ring forming the inner member are pressed axially to put the assembly into an actual mounted state. The inner member and the brake rotor are rotated by rotating the pushrod of the second pressing device, and a cutting tool is moved in a direction parallel to the reference surface to cut the braking surfaces of the brake rotor.
