    • A data transfer apparatus is capable of DMA-transferring the transferable data sequentially generated by a processor. In the data transfer apparatus is provided a counter or an address latch for storing data corresponding to the upper limit (or lower limit) of the address of the transferable data. The content of this counter or latch and the content of the DMA address counter are sequentially compared and transferred, and when these values finally become equal to each other and there is no longer new transferable data, the DMA transfer is stopped and a transfer request is retained. By this constitution, the data transfer between the processor and a device which requires the data generated by the processor may be done instantly and asynchronously.

    • An AV data recording/reproducing device is connected to a digital broadcasting tuner and the like via an IEEE1394 bus, in order to realize high-speed transfer when duplicating or transporting AV data between devices such as audio-visual data recording/reproducing devices. A synchronous transfer input/output portion inputs and outputs stream data that are AV data by isochronous transfer with an MPEG-2 transport stream. A recording control portion and a reproduction control portion generate timestamped data and reproduce the stream data, and an HDD stores the timestamped data. An asynchronous transfer input/output portion asynchronously inputs and outputs the timestamped data by SBP-2 transfer. Consequently, the timestamped data that can reproduce the stream data are transferred at high speeds, regardless of an actual time required for performing the display or the like of the stream data.

    • A transmission apparatus which alleviates, compared to conventional apparatuses, a processing burden such as transmission position management for terminals, which is required for video data distribution in a video-on-demand system distributing video data according to requests from user-side terminals. A transmission apparatus 100 uses an accumulation buffer control subunit 105 and a user buffer control subunit 106 to manage an accumulation buffer 102 of the transmission apparatus and a user buffer 153 of a playback apparatus. Upon receipt of a video data transmission request from the playback apparatus 150, the transmission apparatus 100 determines an accumulation buffer to be assigned to the playback apparatus. If a plurality of playback apparatuses are using the same accumulation buffer, amounts of data transmitted to the playback apparatuses are controlled while referencing user buffers 153 of the playback apparatuses, such that transmission positions of video data transmitted to the playback apparatuses are aligned.
