    • An optical recording medium includes in sequence a transparent substrate, a light-reflecting layer, a transparent intermediate layer and a light-absorbing layer. The light-reflecting layer and the light-absorbing layer are respectively formed as a layer of an organic coloring matter. The light-absorbing layer can cause deformation for recording information accompanied with a local charge in thickness of the transparent intermediate layer in response to a recording beam indicated to the light-absorbing layer through the transparent substrate. The transparent substrate, the light-reflecting layer, the transparent intermediate layer and the light-absorbing layer in combination constitutes a multi-layer optical element with respect to a reproducing beam having a prescribed wavelength and incident to the light-absorbing layer through the transparent substrate, the multi-layer optical element showing a minimum reflectance and a maximum reflectance of the reproducing beam at an incident surface of the optical recording medium at different thicknesses of the transparent intermediate layer. The transparent intermediate layer is formed in a thickness providing a mediate reflectance between the maximum and minimum transmittances. At the record pit, the multi-layer optical element is converted into a fresh element providing a successive reflectance change including a higher and a lower reflectance with respect to the reference reflectance at non-record parts, due to the change in thickness of the transparent intermediate layer.

    • A method of manufacturing a recording medium with an excellent productivity is provided. The method provides a recording medium having excellent ink absorbency and coloring property and includes an ink-receiving layer in which a binder is restricted and controlled. The present invention provides a method of manufacturing a recording medium including the steps of: performing a surface treatment on a substrate; and forming an ink-receiving layer using at least a pigment, polyvinyl alcohol, and a coating liquid that contains at least one selected from the group consisting of boric acid and borate. In this method, the surface-treatment step includes a first surface treatment and a second surface treatment. In the first surface treatment, a coating liquid that contains at least one selected from the group consisting of boric acid and borate is applied followed by being dried and solidified. In the second surface treatment, after the first surface treatment, a coating liquid that contains at least one selected from the group consisting of boric acid and borate is applied on the substrate. While the substrate is in a state of being wet by the coating liquid applied in the second surface treatment, the substrate is further coated with a coating liquid for forming the ink-receiving layer.

    • A recording medium for ink jet printing comprises a base material layer such as paper or plastic sheet, a porous lower layer formed on the base material layer, and a porous upper layer formed on the porous lower layer. The porous lower layer contains hydrated alumina showing a boehmite structure. The porous upper layer mainly comprises agglomerates of spherical silica particles with particle diameters ranging between 1 and 100 nm and a binder and contains voids mainly found between the agglomerates, not within the agglomerates. Preferably, a second type of spherical silica particles having smaller particle diameters than the above first type of spherical silica particles are also contained in the porous upper layer, and in this case, the first type particles have particle diameters ranging between 10 and 100 nm and are mostly found outside the agglomerates, while the second type particles have particle diameters ranging between 1 and 10 nm and are mostly found within the agglomerates. The recording medium provides excellent image qualities even when a large amount of ink is applied at a time in case of high speed printing or different types of ink containing various dyes or pigments are used.
