    • In one embodiment, a magnetic disk apparatus comprises a magnetic disk for recording information; a magnetic head that reads information from, or writes information to, the magnetic disk; an actuator device that drives the magnetic head; and a control system that controls the driving of the actuator device. The actuator device is configured by a dual stage actuator comprising a fine actuator that drives the head and a coarse actuator that drives the magnetic head together with the fine actuator. The control system includes a fine controller that generates an operational value for driving the fine actuator and a coarse controller that generates an operational amount for driving the coarse actuator. The control system includes a mechanism for smoothly changing the operational amount generated by the fine controller immediately before saturation resulting from an applied voltage limit of the fine actuator or at the time the fine actuator returns to a control range from the saturation.

    • An apparatus for positioning a magnetic head includes a servo signal detection circuit for detecting a servo signal recorded on a magnetic disk in a predetermined first period, an acceleration measuring portion which is fitted to a part of a mechanism for mounting a magnetic head, outputs an acceleration signal in a direction of positioning the magnetic head, and samples the acceleration signal in a second period shorter than the first period, a comparison processing portion for comparing a deviation value computed from at least either one of the acceleration signal and the servo signal with a predetermined value, a write inhibit signal generating portion for generating a signal inhibiting write of data on a magnetic disk in accordance with the result of comparison in the comparison processing portion, and a manipulated variable compensation portion for generating manipulated variable for adjusting the position of the magnetic head from at least either one of the servo signal and the acceleration signal and a target value of the position of the magnetic head, whereby to prevent erroneous write operation of data onto a magnetic disk due to unsteady positioning error of the magnetic head.

    • Embodiments described herein provide for robust servo patterns that comply with planarization constraints and also allow use of a single master template for manufacture of both the front and back of a magnetic disk. Planarization constraints are met because only a portion of servo data is hard patterned on the magnetic disk and the hard patterned servo data areas comply with planarization constraints. The servo pattern has two symmetrical servo write assist patterns, one on each side of a central burst pattern. The servo sync, SAM, track-ID, sector-ID, and/or RRO values can be written magnetically by the write head onto these servo write assist patterns after the completion of the planarization process. The symmetric design of the servo pattern allows both a left-to-right and a right-to-left servo write and read back, thereby enabling use of a single master template in magnetic disk manufacture.
