    • A new electrical insulating oil composition having improved low temperature characteristics which composition comprises a mixture of 40% by weight or more of benzyltoluene and the remainder of alkyl substituted diphenylmethane having 15 to 17 carbon atoms which is represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl groups and the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is 1 to 4, except that R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are simultaneously methyl groups; and the proportion of the total quantity of solid phase calculated according to the following general solid-liquid equilibrium equation is 45% by weight or less relative to the total quantity of said composition at -40.degree. C.: ##EQU1## wherein X.sub.i is the equilibrium mole fraction of a component i, in the liquid phase, .DELTA.H.sub.i.sup.f is the heat of fusion (cal.mol.sup.-1), T.sub.i.sup.f is the melting point (K), T is the temperature (K) of the system, and R is the gas constant (cal.mol.sup.-1.K.sup.-1). Electrical capacitors prepared with these electrical insulating oil compositions provide excellent operation at temperatures as low as -40.degree. C., preferably as low as -50.degree. C.

    • An electrical insulating oil composition which comprises 45% by weight or more of at least 2 members selected from the group consisting of (a) m-ethylbiphenyl, (b) p-ethylbiphenyl, (c) o-benzyltoluene, (d) m-benzyltoluene, (e) p-benzyltoluene, and (f) 1,1-diphenylethane; and the remainder of non-condensed bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbons having not more than 17 carbon atoms besides the above 6 components; and is characterized in that, when the temperature of the composition is -40.degree.     • The present invention provides a method for improving impulse destructive strength of an electrical insulating material which is characterized by employing, as the electrical insulating material, a random copolymer of a styrene series monomer and ethylene or a combination of ethylene and another ethylenic unsaturated monomer, or a composition in which the copolymer is blended with an ethylene series polymer, the copolymer being prepared by introducing, into a reaction system, the styrene series monomer selected from the group of styrene and single-ring substituted styrenes, ethylene or the combination of ethylene and the ethylenic unsaturated monomer and a polymerization initiator, the latter being introduced thereinto separately from at least the styrene series monomer, and subjecting these monomers to a high-pressure radical copolymerization under a polymerization pressure of 500 to 4,000 kg/cm.sup.2 at a polymerization temperature of 50.degree. to 400.degree. C., the aforesaid polymer or composition satisfying the following (a) and (b):(a) a content of the styrene series monomer in the copolymer or the composition being within the range of 0.01 to 1 mol %; and(b) a crystallinity of the copolymer or the composition being 30% or more in accordance with X-ray diffraction.
