    • A method for fabricating periodically poled structures. The method produces an electric field within a ferroelectric substrate by applying a voltage waveform to an electrode structure disposed on a surface of the substrate. The waveform raises the electric field magnitude to a level substantially greater than that required to reverse domains within the substrate. The waveform then lowers the voltage such that the electric field has a value at which a domain wall velocity is most sensitive to changes in the field. The waveform maintains the electric field value until a current through the substrate drops substantially. The electric field is then lowered to a value below a level required to sustain domain wall motion, but greater than a level below which backswitching occurs. The electric field is then lowered to zero in such a way as to prevent backswitching. Alternatively, the electric field is maintained for a time t determined by t=x/v, where x is a domain wall half-width and v is a domain wall velocity. Subsequently, the waveforms lower the voltage to zero.

    • A variable focal length lens sensor system for use with UAVs is disclosed. A variable focal length lens camera for use with cell phones. One or more static optical components and one or more are within a housing. The variable focal length lens includes a sidewall and first and second optical surfaces defining an aperture. One or more of the optical surfaces are at least partially elastic. One or more lens fluids are disposed between the aperture and sidewall. An actuator is configured to apply a force to a portion of the variable focal length lens. The applied force results in a change in focal length of the variable focal length lens. The combination of static optical components and variable focal length lenses are capable of providing variable zoom and focus. An image sensor is optically coupled to the variable focal length lens for capturing images. Control electronics are configured to control the fluidic lens and sensor.

    • A digital focus lens systems that can provide an optical system with a plurality of selectable focal powers is described. The system includes a number of switchable elements, each of which is capable of being switched between a first state and a second state, whereby the states represent unique focal powers. The switchable elements may be arranged coaxially in a stack such that each of them may contribute to a cumulative focal power of the system. If, for example, the system includes two such switchable elements, four focal powers for the lens system may be selected by appropriate choice the states of each switchable element. Digital telescopes, cameras, microscopes, and other optical instruments may be implemented using such digital focus lens systems. Methods of fabricating switchable elements and methods of controlling digital lens systems are also disclosed.
