    • According to one embodiment, a system for transmitting an optical signal comprises a traffic distribution circuit configured to distribute traffic to a plurality of wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) modules. The system further comprises a first WDM module and a second WDM module. The first and second WDM modules each comprise a plurality of tunable optical transmitters, with each transmitter associated with a different wavelength band of a plurality of wavelength bands. Each transmitter in the first and second WDM modules is also tuned to transmit optical signals in channels included within the associated wavelength band of the transmitter. The first and second WDM modules each comprise a multiplexer configured to combine the optical signals transmitted from the plurality of transmitters into optical signals. The system further comprises a cyclic multiplexer configured to combine the optical signals from the first and second WDM modules into an optical output signal.

    • In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a method for distributing traffic in a distribution node in an optical network includes receiving wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) traffic in a plurality of wavelengths at at least one of a plurality of filters at the distribution node from at least one of the one or more upstream terminals. The optical network includes one or more upstream terminals, the distribution node, and a plurality of downstream terminals. Each of the filters is coupled to one or more of the upstream terminals by a plurality of separate fibers. The method further includes separating traffic in a first set of one or more wavelengths from traffic in a second set of one or more wavelengths at the filter. The method further includes routing the traffic in the first set of wavelengths for distribution to all downstream terminals. The method further includes routing the traffic in each wavelength of the second set of wavelengths for distribution to a particular subset of the downstream terminals.

    • In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a system and method for managing network components in a passive optical network (PON) is provided. In a particular embodiment, the method includes transmitting, at a first wavelength, a first configuration message on the PON, wherein the first configuration message comprises a first transmitter interface number. The method also includes transmitting, at a second wavelength and at approximately the same time as the first message, a second configuration message on the PON, wherein the second configuration message comprises a second transmitter interface number. The method further includes receiving a configuration response message from each of one or more optical network units (ONUs) in a first set of ONUs that comprises the first transmitter interface number and receiving a configuration response message from each of one or more ONUs in a second set of ONUs that comprises the second transmitter interface number. The method also includes, based on the configuration response messages from the first set and second set of ONUs, associating, in a database, each ONU in the first set of ONUs with the first wavelength and each ONU in the second set of ONUs with the second wavelength. The method further includes, using the database, transmitting downstream traffic destined for any ONU in the first set of ONUs at the first wavelength and transmitting downstream traffic for any ONU in the second set of ONUs at the second wavelength.

    • In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a system and method for traffic distribution in an optical network is provided. In a particular embodiment, a traffic distribution module in a passive optical network (PON), includes a filter configured to receive downstream traffic in a first set of one or more wavelengths and a second set of one or more wavelengths from an optical line terminal (OLT), direct the traffic in the first set of wavelengths to a primary power splitter, and direct the traffic in the second set of wavelengths to a first connector. The traffic distribution module also includes a primary power splitter and a plurality of secondary power splitters. The primary power splitter is configured to receive the traffic in the first set of wavelengths and distribute the traffic in the first set to the plurality of secondary power splitters coupled to the primary power splitter such that optical network units (ONUs) in the PON receive the traffic in the first set of wavelengths. The traffic distribution module also includes a first connector configured to couple to a first module connector of a pluggable module and to forward the traffic in the second set of wavelengths to the pluggable module via the first module connector. The traffic distribution module also includes a plurality of second connectors configured to couple to a plurality of second module connectors of the pluggable module, receive the traffic in the second set of wavelengths from the pluggable module via the associated second module connectors, and forward the traffic in the second set to the plurality of secondary power splitters for distribution to particular ONUs in the PON.

    • In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a system and method for transmitting traffic in a plurality of passive optical networks (PONs) is provided. In a particular embodiment, a method for transmitting traffic in a plurality of passive optical networks (PONs) includes transmitting traffic at a first wavelength and at a second wavelength from an optical line terminal (OLT).
