    • A quick release chuck device has a body member defining an axially extending bore for receipt of a tool shank. At least a portion of the bore is defined by a plurality of radially compressible and axially extending gripping segments. The gripping segments are equally spaced and defined by axial slots extending from a front face of the body member. At least two axially extending and aligned recesses are defined on each of the gripping segments. An operating member is coaxial with and surrounds at least the gripping segments of the body member. The operating member defines a varying radial width channel with the recesses formed on the outside of the gripping segments. The operating member is axially movable relative to the body member. Actuating elements, such as balls, are disposed within the varying radial width channels. The actuating elements are movable within the channels by axial movement of the sleeve member from a gripping position wherein the balls are in a reduced radial width section of the channels causing the gripping segments to compress radially inward, and a release position wherein the balls move into a greater radial width section of the channels allowing radial expansion of the gripping segments.

    • A power rotary tool has a drive spindle and a chuck device mounted on the end of the spindle. The chuck device has a body member with an axial bore through an end thereof that defines a female pilot section and a threaded longitudinal section adjacent and rearward of the female pilot section. A flat shoulder is defined on the body member rearward of the threaded longitudinal section. The drive spindle has a male pilot section at a forward end thereof and a threaded longitudinal section adjacent and rearward of the male pilot section. A radial stop is defined on the drive spindle adjacent and rearward of the threaded section. Upon mounting of the chuck onto the drive spindle, the male pilot longitudinal section slides tightly within and uniformly contacts the female pilot longitudinal section and the shoulder of the body member abuts directly against the radially extending stop defined on the drive spindle.

    • A rotary power tool is provided having a remotely actuated chuck device. The chuck is mounted onto the end of a drive spindle that extends from the casing of the power tool. The chuck includes an outer sleeve member that is axially movable relative to the drive spindle between a gripping and release position. A chuck actuating device is provided having a first member engaged with the outer sleeve member and which extends generally radially outward from the drive spindle or chuck. The first member is movable in a direction so as to move the outer sleeve member between the gripping position and release position. A solenoid and a biasing mechanism engage the first member so that the chuck device is movable between the gripping and release positions.
