    • A method is provided for allocating physical transmission channels in a mobile radio cell, in which a base station, linked with a node of a mobile communication network; and a number of mobile terminals are present. In all mobile terminals and in the node of the mobile communication network the UMTS protocol architecture is implemented for at least the layer (2) and the layer (3) of the UMTS layer model. In at least one group of mobile terminals the physical transmission channel to be used for a multicast service is signaled for every mobile user terminal from the base station of the mobile radio cell. The present invention seeks to make the allocation of physical transmission channels in a mobile radio cell for a multicast service more efficient. Signaling of the allocation of a physical transmission channel to one of the mobile user terminals of the group from the node of the mobile communication network is carried out via the base station to the mobile user terminal by a general physical channel and system information is made available in advance to the group of mobile user terminals. The system information contains the configurations of the physical transmission channels for the multicast service and of the general physical channel. The system information further contains the information that the signaling of the allocation of the physical transmission channels is carried out on the general physical channel.

    • Data packets are transmitted via a radio interface, wherein a control unit of a first entity transmits information via its logical channels serving as service access points in the form of a configuration message, with the configuration message including information about which logical channels are to be mapped onto which transport channels serving as service access points for a bit transmission layer. A set of transport formats are predetermined for each of the transport channels along with a set of permitted combinations of transport formats for all transport channels. Each transport format includes a set of parameters determining transmission characteristics of the transport channel configured with the corresponding transport format. The first entity selects a transport format for each of the transport channels, such that the resulting combination of transport formats corresponds to one of the transport combinations defined as permissible and wherein the first entity transmits the data to initiate the transmission of the data packets.

    • In a third generation (UMTS) mobile radiotelephone system, data are transmitted between a base station and a mobile station in packet form via the air interface. A connection control protocol with the task of, inter alia, establishing whether and which of the data packets have been lost during the transmission, using control data, functions in both stations. These control data are added to each packet that is sent by the connection control protocol. Several packets can be transmitted within the transmission interval and the number of packets can vary from interval to interval. This allows different data transmission rates. The inventive method enables the number of packets that are sent via the air interface to be reduced, by transmitting larger, rather than more, packets within a predetermined interval, while not affecting the possibility of varying the data transmission rate.
