    • A system and method are disclosed for logically disconnecting fire alarm equipment from elevator control equipment to enable independent testing of each equipment set. The system and method may include an interface having a fire alarm equipment side and an elevator control side which are interconnected by a plurality of relays. A plurality of action relays may be associated with specific functions of the elevator controller. A plurality of bypass relays are interposed between the action relays and the elevator controller so that when a “bypass” operation is initiated, the bypass relays prevent signals from the action relays from reaching the elevator controller. As such, the action relays can be tested without impacting ongoing elevator operations. In addition, the logical disconnection arrangement ensures proper functioning of the system once testing is completed. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

    • A self-adjusting speaker integrated with an alarm system is provided. The self-adjusting speaker may be used to aurally monitor an area (such as monitoring the ambient noise in the vicinity of the speaker) and adjust the speaker accordingly. The circumstances under which to aurally monitor a premises (such as how to monitor, when to monitor, what type of monitoring, etc.) may be varied. For example, there are several ways how to perform the aural monitoring (such as how to sense the ambient noise), including using a separate microphone or the speaker itself. A self-monitoring speaker integrated with an alarm system is also provided. The self-monitoring speaker may monitor the aural output of the speaker using a microphone or similar type of transducer. The aural output monitored by the microphone may be analyzed, and, based on the analysis, the data and/or operation of the speaker may be modified.

    • A device and method for facilitating convenient functional testing of a duct detector is provided. The device includes a duct detector having a remote-controlled test light mounted in a housing thereof, and a detector chamber defined by a filter screen and a plurality of labyrinth members that allow light emitted by the test light to enter the detector chamber. A functional test of the duct detector can be conducted by activating the test light. If the detector is functioning properly, an amount of light emitted by the test light will be detected by the light detector, thereby simulating the presence of an excessive amount of particulate within the detector chamber. The light detector will then generate an output signal that will cause the actuation of alarms and/or the deactivation of a blower system, thereby indicating functionality of the duct detector.
