    • A system and method for controlling duplicate transaction submission in a web browser/web server environment. The client web browser is modified to include a process duplicate action select (e.g. duplicate mouse “clicks”) detection. This process establishes a variable for an action indicating whether the action has been previously selected. Upon selection, the process tests the action variable and passes the transaction request if not previously submitted and returns an error otherwise. The server process has been augmented with a duplicate transaction process. The server software inserts a _tranid parameter into each of a plurality of selected pages returned to a browser for transaction processing. The server maintains a record of the last used jranid. The server compares a tranid returned in a user request to the recorded value. If previously processed, an error is returned to the requester. If not previously processed, the recorded “last transaction id” is updated and the request fulfilled.

    • A method and apparatus in a distributed data processing system for processing requests for documents. A request is received from a user for a selected page at a server. The selected page is returned to the user with a unique token, wherein each user is sent a unique token. Responsive to receiving a new request for a page, a determination is made as to whether the new request includes the unique token. Responsive to receiving the new request including the unique token, a determination is made as to whether a previous request from this user is simultaneously being processed by the server. Responsive to a new request having been received for a document while another prior request is pending, the new request is processed by either rejecting the new request, or by canceling the previous request and processing the new request, or by delaying the processing of the new request until the previous request has completed.

    • A method and system for storing a running image of an operating system on a removable operating system module. The module is first inserted into a first computer system. The operating system is installed on the first computer, an execution of the operating system is initiated, and a running image of the operating system is saved to the nonvolatile memory unit of the removable module. The removable module is removed from the first computer system and inserted into the second computer system where the running image of the operating system is loaded to a second memory accessible by the one or more processors included in the second computer system. The operating system is then executed by the processors. A user can update the operating system by connecting to a manufacturer's website and downloading an update or by sending the removable operating system module to the manufacturer for an update.

    • A method and system for providing a running image of an operating system on a removable operating system module to multiple computer systems. The removable operating system module includes a memory unit for storing the running image of the operating system. Upon insertion of the module into a computer system, a BIOS loads the operating system from the removable operating system module and initiates the execution of the operating system. In response to a request by the user, the BIOS may resume or restart the operating system. The operating system may also discover any available local and remote devices, resume any available previously running applications, and perform tasks requested by the applications and the user. In response to a user's removal request, the state of the operating system is saved on the module and the removable operating system module is removed from the computer system.

    • A method and system of certifying that a copy of a Web page was made at a particular time by a user of a Web client. A client piece preferably includes a one-way hashing function that, when applied to a Web page copy, generates a unique string. The string is concatenated with a URL for the Web page, a timestamp and other identifying information, to generate a signature. Using a public key cryptosystem, the signature is provided to a certification server. Upon receipt, the server first determines whether the signature represents the Web page copy. If so, a confirmation is sent to the client, and the signature is stored in a database. Preferably, the Web page copy itself is not stored in the database. Signatures from other Web page copies received during a given period (e.g., the same day) are then summed and the sum is published. Later, when the user desires to verify that the Web page copy is authentic, a determination is made regarding whether application of the given function to the page generates a signature previously stored in the database and/or a value equal to the published sum for the given day. If so, the Web page copy is accepted as authentic.

    • One or more searchable repositories of bookmark sets are stored in a computer system, each bookmark set can be downloaded to a client browser as a unit. Each bookmark set contains a set of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) and is associated with related information such as a set of keywords, one or more topics and user specific information. The bookmark set is downloadable as a unit to the client browser. When a search query from a client containing a set of keywords is received, the stored bookmark sets are searched for one or more bookmark sets associated with at least one keyword matching a keyword from the search query. A list of bookmark sets which satisfy the query, i.e. are associated with matching keywords, are returned to the client browser. Responsive to a request for downloading a selected bookmark set, the selected bookmark is served to the client. The selected bookmark set is received and used by the client browser to access the set of URLs in the selected bookmark set. In one embodiment of the invention, some bookmarks within a bookmark set are designated as base bookmarks which are always served with the bookmark set.
