    • This invention relates to a process for preparing phenylacetic acid. In particular, the present invention relates to a catalytic process for the synthesis of the alkaline salts of phenylacetic acid by carbonylation of benzyl halides in a diphase system in the presence of cobalt carbonyl complexes. More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for preparing alkaline salts of phenylacetic acid by reacting a benzyl halide selected from chloride and bromide with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst consisting in a salt of cobalt hydrocarbonyl, characterized in that the reaction is conducted in an aqueous/organic diphase system consisting of (a) an aqueous solution of an inorganic alkaline base, and (b) the benzyl halide in an organic solvent, in the presence of a catalyst system composed by a quaternary alkylammonium salt and by a cobalt hydrocarbonyl salt, at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature ranging from 20.degree. to 70.degree. C about.

    • A process for preparing carboxylic acids by reaction of carbon monoxide with aromatic and aliphatic organic halides, optionally further substituted by groups inert under the reaction conditions, and catalyzed by phosphinic palladium complexes and in the presence of quaternary alkyl-ammonium salts, characterized in that said process is conducted in a double liquid phase consisting essentially of (a) the organic halide and the catalytic palladium complex or their solutions in at least one hydrocarbon solvent immiscible with H.sub.2 O, and (b) an aqueous inorganic alkaline solution containing the quaternary alkyl-ammonium salt, at a temperature between about 50.degree. and 150.degree. C. More particularly, the reaction is conducted in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from among:A. at least one palladium complex of the formula:Pd[P(R).sub.3 ].sub.mwherein m is a whole number from 2 to 4, and (R).sub.3 represents a homogeneous or a heterogeneous group consisting of phenyl and/or alkyl radicals which may also be further substituted by inert groups;B. at least one palladium complex of the general formula:Pd[P(R).sub.2 -- (CH.sub.2).sub.n -- P(R).sub.2 ].sub.pwherein (R).sub.2 has the same meaning indicated above for (R).sub.3, p is a whole number from 1 to 2, and n is a whole number from 1 to 6; orC. at least one palladium complex of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein the groups (R).sub.3, equal to or different from each other, have the same meaning as indicated above, and Y is a halogen atom and/or an aryl radical.
