    • A diagnostic apparatus for a vehicle can display diagnostic results and an indication of whether or not the diagnosis has been completed with a single display device. The diagnostic apparatus adapted to be mounted on the vehicle for diagnosing the vehicle based on driving condition parameters of the vehicle includes a display device or an indicator for indicating presence or absence of malfunction based on the diagnostic results, means for switching the diagnostic apparatus into a notification mode in response to a predetermined operation state, and a display control unit for displaying on the display device the indication of whether or not the diagnosis has been completed in response to being switched into the notification mode. The indication of whether or not the diagnosis has been uncompleted can be displayed on the display device by switching into a notification mode in response to the predetermined operation status. The display device may be a lamp provided near a driver's seat in the vehicle, and the indication of whether or not the diagnosis has been completed may be effected by blinking the lamp.

    • A method of controlling the air-fuel ratio of a mixture of fuel supplied to an internal combustion engine. Feedback control is effected to response to an output from an exhaust-gas concentration sensor to bring the air-fuel ratio to a predetermined value when the engine is in a predetermined medium-load operating region. It is determined whether or not the engine is in a predetermined high-load operating region in which the feedback control is interrupted for bringing the air-fuel ratio to a value smaller than the predetermined value, and whether or not the engine is in a predetermined low-load operating region in which the feedback control is interrupted for bringing the air-fuel ratio to a value larger than the predetermined value. The feedback control is effected even when the engine is in the predetermined low-load operating region, if the engine continually stayed over a first predetermined time period in the predetermined high-load operating region, and has shifted to the low-load operating region within a second predetermined time period after leaving the predetermined high-load operating region.

    • An idling speed feedback control method for an internal combustion engine for controlling the operating amount of a control valve for regulating the quantity of intake air being supplied to the engine in response to the difference between a desired idling speed and an actual engine speed, while the engine is in a predetermined idling region. A correction value for the operating amount of the control valve is determined in dependence upon the valve of a signal indicative of generating conditions of a generator driven by the engine for supplying electric power to at least one electrical device, and the operating amount of the control valve is corrected by means of the thus determined correction value. When the engine has entered the predetermined idling region immediately following deceleration, an initial value of the operating amount of the control valve which is applied at the start of the feedback control is set to a sum of a value obtained by correcting the correction value by means of a predetermined increment, and a predetermined reference value. While the engine is decelerating toward the predetermined idling region, the operating amount of the control valve is set to a value equal to the initial value.

    • A knocking control system for an internal combustion engine with the inlet valves and exhaust valves having valve timing thereof controlled depending on operating conditions of the engine. It is determined whether or not knocking has occurred in the engine on the basis of a detection parameter indicative of knocking and at least one discrimination parameter. The operation of the engine is controlled by the use of at least one control parameter in response to the determination result. The values of the discrimination and control parameters arfe selected in accordance with the actual valve timing. The detection parameter is a level of vibration of the engine comprising a noise component and a knocking component. It is determined that knocking has occurred when the level of the knocking component is higher than one knocking discrimination level set based on the level of the noise component and the discrimination parameter irrespective of the actual valve timing. The discrimination parameter includes correction terms set to such values as to obtain the one knocking discrimination level, by being multiplied by and added to the level of the noise component, respectively.

    • A method of controlling the supply of fuel to an internal combustion engine having first and second fuel injection valves arranged in the intake passage downstream and upstream of the throttle valve, respectively, both being upstream of the intake manifold wherein the first and second fuel injection valves are selectively operated to supply fuel to the cylinders in dependence on operating conditions of the engine. Fuel is supplied to a plurality of cylinders of the engine through the first fuel injection valve alone when the engine is operating in a predetermined low load condition. In a middle/high load middle speed region of the engine, a substantially constant minimum required quantity of fuel is supplied through the first fuel injection valve, and simultaneously a quantity of fuel appropriate to the middle/high load middle speed region is supplied through the second fuel injection valve. In a high load high speed region of the engine, if a time interval of generation of a signal generated at predetermined crank angles of the engine is longer than the fuel injection period of the second fuel injection valve, a quantity of fuel corresponding to a difference therebetween is supplied through the first fuel injection valve and simultaneously a quantity of fuel corresponding to the time interval is supplied through the second fuel injection valve.
