SOLUTION: The electric capacitance (C) between two stator conductor surfaces (8.1, 8.2) of a stator conductor surface structure is detected during operation to monitor the sealing structure for sealing a shaft (2) relative to a stationary part (1) having a shaft sealing ring (3) with the shaft conductor surface arrangement, a stator sealing ring (4) with a stator conductor surface structure that is electrically insulated from the shaft conductor surface structure, and a capacitive measuring device. The stator conductor surface structure has a first stator conductor surface (8.1) and at least a second stator conductor surface (8.2) that is electrically insulated from the latter (8.1), and the shaft conductor surface structure has at least one shaft conductor surface (9), and a measuring device has a device for detecting the electric capacitance (C) between the two stator conductor surfaces (8.1, 8.2) of the stator conductor surface structure.
