    • An image display device incorporating a specialized phase expansion circuit, a rotation circuit, a sampling device and unique controlling circuitry. The phase expansion circuit includes a plurality of trail buffers or sample holder circuits for receiving a serially applied train of pixel image signals, expanding or extending the assertion cycle time and generating a corresponding plurality of expanded image signal trains in parallel. Preferably, one combination of expanded pixel image signals corresponding to specific position of pixels arranged in matrix in one train is different from another combination of expanded pixel image signals. The rotational circuit includes a plurality of selecting circuits for receiving the manifold trains of expanded pixel image signals generated by the phase expansion circuit. Each selecting circuit preferably selects one of these trains of expanded pixel image signals and generates a corresponding second train of expanded pixel image signals in parallel according to variable combinations specified by the control circuit. The sampling device receives these second trains of expanded pixel image signals, reconstructs and generates image signal for driving pixels. The control circuitry directs the phase expansion circuit to periodically change the pixel column ordering combinations used to generate the first set of expanded image signal trains. As the column ordering combinations vary, the preferred control circuitry may correspondingly instruct the rotation to reorder or decode the received image signal trains into an expanded signal train in a form suitable for sampling image reconstruction and display. Therefore, even if there are variations of characteristics of individual components such as transistors in the phase expansion circuit and such variation affects uniform brightness of each pixel, these differences in characteristics can be dissipated through periodic resequencing. Consequently, a uniform high-resolution image can be displayed and perceived in the display area.

    • A projection-type video display in which the entire input video signal is first digitally corrected through digital gamma correction. Then, a subset of the corrected video signal is corrected again through analogue correction techniques. In particular this portion of the digitally corrected video signal corresponds to the subject where slopes of applied voltage-transmissivity characteristic curve (V-T curve) of liquid crystal changes relatively rapidly. The result is a more accurate gamma correction which is also less expensive than conventional, purely digital gamma correction systems. Another feature is the inclusion of three liquid crystal light valves, each having have a plurality of pixels arranged in the matrix and identical shift registers in such a way that pixels of one scanning line are driven selectively and sequentially from the same horizontal direction according to a given set of video signals, a memory where at least video signals for pixels of one scanning line are written and stored, a first drive controller for outputting video signals of one scanning line from memory in the order in which the video signals were written and supplying the video signals to pixels of a scanning line in at least one of light valves, and a second drive controller for outputting video signals of one scanning line from memory in a reverse order in which video signals were written thereto for supplying another light valve. Also disclosed is recognition unit for recognizing different types of input video signal format systems and a write controller for controlling the way of writing input video signals of each scanning line into pixels of horizontal scanning lines in the light valves based on different type of input video signal format system.

    • Aspects of the invention provide a projector capable of comparatively easily achieving a contrast ratio higher than the original contrast ratio of the liquid-crystal light valve by a simple mechanism. The illumination light modulated by liquid-crystal light valves, i.e., image light, can be combined together in a cross dichroic prism, and then light intensity of suitable pixels is reduced by a proper amount by a liquid-crystal light valve, and then sent to a projection lens. The image light entering the projection lens can be projected to a projection surface. Because the light intensity of the image light formed by the liquid-crystal light valves is appropriately attenuated at suitable pixel areas by the liquid-crystal light valve, image light projection with a contrast ratio exceeding by far the contrast ratio achievable by the liquid-crystal light valves alone is possible due to cumulative light-intensity adjustment.

    • A check valve is installed in a hydraulic line for hydraulic oil to be fed to a forward movement hydraulic clutch, while an accumulator for accumulating some amount of the hydraulic oil fed to the hydraulic clutch is installed between the check valve and the hydraulic clutch. Further installed is a control spool that is operated by the hydraulic oil fed to the forward movement hydraulic clutch and that cooperates with the check valve to hold the hydraulic oil accumulated in the accumulator. According to this arrangement, even if the oil pressure drops momentarily due to a speed gear shift, the pressure for the hydraulic clutch before the gear shift is held by the hydraulic oil accumulated in the accumulator. Thus, a delay in torque restoration due to a slip of the hydraulic clutch can be eliminated, so that an operator can be freed from having a feeling of torque loss or a shock, and a feeling of uneasiness such as a feeling of reversing on an uphill slope, during the gear shift.
