    • In an electrostatic type ink-jet printer of the type leaving "guard drops" between charged drops, an electronic circuit is provided which generates charge-enabling signals in response to which guard drops are charged. When a sync signal is generated which synchronizes the rotation of a rotary drum with a print signal, one of the charge-enabling signals which is timed to charge an ink drop causes this ink drop to be charged. As compared with the prior art, ink dot misplacement due to the out-of-synchronization which in turn is due to the variations in rotation of the rotary drum can be more finely corrected. In addition, ink dot misplacement can be more precisely corrected by controlling the charge on an ink drop by pulses which have divided periods of that of the sync signals and which are synchronized with the sync signals.

    • A first ink tank (17) is attached to a movable ink jet printing head (12) for supplying ink thereto. A second ink tank (28) which is larger than the first ink tank (17) is fixedly mounted at an end of a carriage (19) which supports the printing head (12). After the printing head (12) prints a line, a print end signal causes a sensor (33) to sense the amount of ink in the first ink tank (17). If the amount is low the printing head (12) is moved so that a connector (31) of the first ink tank (17) mates with a connector (29) of the second ink tank (28) and ink is urged to flow from the second ink tank (28) to fill up the first ink tank (17). The amount of ink in the first ink tank (17) is again sensed and if it is still low, indicating that the amount of ink in the second ink tank (28) is also low, an annunciator (41) is energized to urge the apparatus operator to fill the second ink tank (28) with ink.

    • An alternating drive signal is applied to an ink ejection head (11) to cause a jet of ink to be ejected which separates into droplets at a certain position. A charging electrode (16) is provided at this position to charge the droplets where it is desired to print a dot. Charged droplets are deflected by deflection electrodes (18), (19) to hit a sheet of paper (32) for printing whereas uncharged drops hit a gutter (21). The sheet (32) is moved relative to the ejection head (11) for scanning. The phases of the drive signal and an alternating charging signal applied to the charging electrode (16) are continuously varied between limit values. The phase of the charging signal is locked when the sheet (32) reaches a prescan position. The phase of the drive signal is locked when a charged condition of the droplets is detected. This ensures that adjacent scan lines will not be displaced from each other in the scan direction.

    • An ink-jet recording apparatus wherein the ink jet is issued from an ink head or manifold and broken into drops. The selected ink drop is charged and made to pass through a first deflection means which deflects the charged ink drop in two mutually perpendicular directions, one being in parallel with a main scanning direction while the other being perpendicular to said direction. After leaving the first deflection means, the charged ink drop passes through a second deflection means which can cancel or nullify the deflection of the charged drop in said other direction, leaving the charged drop subject to the deflection in said main scanning direction so as to be steered to a predetermined point on a recording medium. The ink drops which are not used are not charged and travel a straight trajectory so as to be trapped by a gutter between the first and second deflection means.
