摘要： A communication system (100) optimizes system performance by selectively managing which mobile stations (MSs) (e.g., MS 102) are to serve as test MSs. The test MSs report system operating parameters in order to detect flaws in system coverage or in order to determine an impact of a change in an access network configuration. The communication system further provides for end-to-end messaging between the test MSs and network servers (e.g., server 122) via an access network (110) and a core network (120), thereby permitting network elements that are best able to perform system optimization to control the monitoring, measuring, and reporting by the MSs. To minimize system and user inconvenience, reporting by a test MS further may be based on whether the MS is in an area of low mobility, has an acceptable power source output level, or is operating in a cell with an acceptable load level.

By providing the MS with a RAND Token that need not be confirmed, as opposed to the prior art where an MS cannot know whether a global random challenge value provided to the MS prior to a determination by the MS of a need to access the communication network is stale and therefore must confirm the global random challenge value before using it, a call may be set up in an expedited fashion.

摘要： The need to facilitate wireless presence-based services more efficiently is addressed by embodiments of the present invention. In general, a wireless presence proxy (WPP) (131) caches presence updates (such as buddy list presence updates) from a presence server (161) for a mobile station (MS) (101). The WPP maintains presence information, which reflects the presence updates received, for transfer to the MS when an update condition exists. Thus, updates are made when, for example, a resource-efficient condition is present, such as the assignment of a traffic channel for other call activity. The WPP also updates the presence server, on behalf of the MS, when the MS presence status changes. In this manner, the embodiments described are able to reduce the system resources required to facilitate wireless presence-based services.
