摘要： An air bag system (10) is provided for use in a motor vehicle. The air bag system includes at least one air bag module (100). A multiple level gas generation source is coupled to the air bag module for generating a selected gas generation level applied to the air bag module. An electronic control unit (200) controls the operation of multiple level gas generation source. At least one temperature sensor (206) is coupled to the electronic control unit for sensing ambient temperature. At least one seat belt sensor (208) is coupled to the electronic control unit for sensing seat belt usage. An acceleration sensor (204) is coupled to the electronic control unit for sensing deceleration during a crash. The electronic control unit is responsive to a combination of sensed inputs from the temperature sensor, the seat belt sensor and the acceleration sensor for determining both an optimum gas generation level and inflation sequence times for controlling the multiple level gas generation source.

摘要： Gas generator filter (36) is formed by spirally winding a sequence of elongate elements onto a rotating mandrel (18). First perforate support material (12) is wound onto the mandrel and opposing edges of the perforate material are joined to form a cylindrical core. One or more filter layers each comprising a layer of filter media (22) overwound with a layer of gas permeable support screen material (24) are wound on to the core. The filter layers are held in place by one or two outer layers of gas permeable screen material, the outermost layer being connected to that immediately beneath it. Filter units (36) of the required length are cut from the filter (32) formed by this continuous process. The filter media (22) is ceramic filter paper. The screen materials are made of carbon steel, nickel-plated carbon steel or 300 series stainless steel.

摘要： An apparatus and a method for producing inflation gas for use in inflating a vehicle occupant restraint are provided wherein a filter housed within a chamber of the apparatus effects gas redirection and particulate removal from at least a portion of the hot gas released from a gas generating material-containing first chamber of the apparatus, forming a hot gas having a significantly reduced particulate content. The apparatus includes a diffuser having one or more controlling orifices and exit ports to provide for the passage of inflation gas therethrough into the vehicle occupant restraint. There is at least an approximately 180.degree. cumulative change in gas direction between contacting the filter and the passage of the inflation gas into the diffuser.

Initiation of the generant material (70) causes an upper piston portion of the cup (42) to separate from the rest of the cup at a circumferential groove (52) and move upwardly uncovering openings (55) which allows hot gas to pass outwardly into a surrounding toroidal chamber (20) accommodating pressurised gas from where gas passes inwardly through further openings (58) into the centre tie (22) above the cup (42) and then out of the inflator through a frangibly sealed orifice (40). Upward movement of the piston portion is arrested by friction and inwardly directed tabs (60).

Alternatively one diffuser portion may be formed with an outwardly directed flange for connection to an integrally formed remainder of the combination.
