Locomotives.-A set of four track levers coacts with a set of four levers on the engine to actuate bell and lamp signals thereon, and track signals operated from the same connexions from the cabin serve as starting signals. The track apparatus consists of a number of pivoted levers, rotated about a horizontal axis to engage the engine contact-levers which are also mounted on horizontal pivots. Cords attached to the end of these levers serve to pull down a rod l , Fig. 3. This rod supports a weight n , which is attached by cords to a sliding rod k for releasing a weight l for closing the steam valve h, to the latch z for releasing a spring-operated shutter from a lamp j , and to a bell k , which is sounded when the weight falls. When the cord attached to the rod l is released, a weight p replaces the weight n to its normal position. At the side of the track, a shed is provided with a lamp q constantly visible, and with a lamp w and an electric bell x, which are put in action by a weight t when this weight is allowed to fall to give a starting signal. The levers of each set are for giving 'clear' and 'danger' signals for indicating approach to a station and for giving danger signals and stopping the train simultaneously.
