    • High molecular weight, substantially linear, unsaturated copolymers in which the macro-molecules consist of monomeric units of ethylene, or an aliphatic, alpha-olefin and a cyclo-olefin of the formula in which R is H or a C1 to C6 alkyl group, and at least some of the units of the cyclo-olefin in the polymeric chain having the structure of a pentenamer are made by effecting the polymerization of the monomers in the presence of a catalyst based on a titanium halide and an organo-metallic compound of a metal of Group Ia, IIa, or IIIa of the Mendeleoff Periodic Table. The polymerization may be effected in bulk, or in the presence of a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent or diluent. The alpha-olefin is preferably propylene or butene-1. The copolymers may be solvent fractionated. Specified cyclo-olefins are cyclopentene, 2 - methyl - cyclopentene - 1, 3- methyl - cyclopentene - 1,4 - methyl - cyclopentene - 1, 3 - ethyl - cyclopentene - 1, 1,5- dimethyl - cyclopentene - 1, 3 - iso - cyclopentene-1, and 1-n-hexyl-cyclopentene-1. Exemplified copolymers are ethylene and cyclopentene, ethylene and 4-methyl-cyclopentene-1, propylene and cyclopentene-1, butene-1 and cyclopentene-1, and ethylene and 3-methyl cyclopentene. The polymers are recovered and purified by known techniques and may be vulcanized by conventional methods. Specification 967,836 is referred to.
