Compound engines with valves for converting double-acting engines into single-acting; slide valves -Relates to engines of the tandem compound type, and consists in means for enabling the engine to be worked either single-acting or doubleacting by a double - D slide valve actuated by a single eccentric. Fig. 1 shows an external view of the cylinders and valve-chest, and Fig. 2 a section at right-angles to Fig. 1. Steam-inlet openings 13, 14, both connected with the branched supply pipe 9, are arranged one on each side of the passages 7, 8 leading from the valve-chest to the high - pressure cylinder 1. By means of valves 11 ,12 , both the openings 13, 14 may be supplied with steam so as to make the engine double-acting, or either may be closed so as to make it singleacting. The steam passages of the low-pressure cylinder 2 are disposed as usual one on each side of the final exhaust 15. Steam is distributed to both cylinders by a single valve 17, which works between the cylinder port face and a plate 19 pressed against its back by springs. The valve has two cavities or Dees 20, 21, and is hollow from end to end, and has three ports 22, 23, 24 communicating with the hollow interior, whereby the steam is conveyed from the cylinder 1 to the low-pressure cylinder 2.

    • The subject invention relates in part to the discovery of a spontaneous sunflower mutation. The subject invention involves an 'early' mutation and related inbred/hybrid development. The subject invention further provides a single dominant gene that confers earliness in sunflower inbred isolines and near isogenic hybrids. There is no known prior teaching or suggestion of this gene's utility for hybrid development in the industry. The subject indention also provides a new and distinctive sunflower inbred line designated H 120R. The invention includes seeds that possess this mutated gene, plants produced by growing these seeds, and progeny thereof that possess this mutated gene and the associated earliness trait. The subject invention also includes methods for producing such sunflower seeds and plants, including inbreds and hybrids. Such plants can be produced by, for example, crossing such an inbred line with itself or with another sunflower line.

    • An apparatus and corresponding method of use extracts, cools, and transports effluents from subterranean, sub-sea oil formations to distant shore based processing facilities. The effluents, mostly crude oil, are conveyed rapidly to a cold flow generator near the oil wellhead on the sea bottom using the cold seawater to chill the effluents to a dispersed mixture including generated solids. The mixture is transported close to sea bottom temperatures, slowly, with small pressure drops, in low-cost submerged bare pipes over long distances to on or near shore processing facilities that can produce useful hydrocarbon products more cost effectively than at sea processing facilities. The apparatus eliminates or minimizes the need for heated or insulated pipe, the need for large floating processing structures, the need for sub-sea processing equipment, and/or the need for chemical additions to production flow.
