A sheathing device 3 is detached from the rail 6 and mounted on the bottom of the shallow ditch, and a deep ditch in depth of 2m is excavated while sheet piles 4 are pushed into the ground by cylinders 26. Sand is spread on the bottom of the deep ditch, a burying article is laid in the ditch, and soil and sand are backfilled and rolled. The sheet piles 4 are drawn up, a saddle 9 is lowered, a sheathing frame is connected, and struts are shrunk. The ditch is backfilled by soil and sand while pulling up the sheathing device 3, and arms 10-12 for the excavator 2 are bent in a chevron shape, and housed in the container 1.

To erect a columnar object such as an electric pole in the cylindrical hole 14 in which the cylindrical-hole earth retaining device is thus set, a lid 1b is removed, the four screw shafts 12a to 12d are driven one by one to move the sleeves 8a to 8d so as to fold and pull the support plates 4a to 4d, 5a to 5d, 6a to 6d out from the cylindrical hole 14. Then the lower end of the columnar object is inserted into the cylindrical hole 14 and the periphery of the hole is backfilled to complete the procedure.
