    • 1336319 Olefin polymerization catalyst MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 1 Dec 1970 [8 Dec 1969] 56953/70 Heading C3P Polymers of high crystallinity are obtained by polymerizing α-olefins in the presence of a catalyst comprising (i) a compound of a transition metal of Group IV, V or VI: (ii) an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I, II or III; and (iii) a tropylium (including substituted tropylium or fused ring-tropylium) salt. The catalyst components may be mixed in any order and, for example, (ii) and (iii) may be aged together before the addition of (i). The poly. merization of propylene is described, using heptane as the dispersion medium or dispersing the catalyst on preformed polypropylene and carrying out the polymerization in the gas phase. In the examples the catalyst components are (i) TiCl 3 , (ii) Et 3 Al, Et 2 AlCl or (i-Pr) 2 AlCl, and (iii) various tropylium salts. A comparative example describes the use of triphenylmethyl chloride instead of the tropylium salt.

    • 1411144 Olefin polymerization catalysts MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 15 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 1984/73 Heading C3P α-Olefins are polymerized by contacting them with a catalyst system prepared by combining I, a solid prepared by milling TiCl 3 in the presence of at least one modifier selected from (a) halohydrocarbons including perhalogenated hydrocarbons, (b) halides of Se, Te, Sb, Cr, Au, Pb, V or Ge and (c) compounds of the formula where X is halogen, Y is H or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or alkoxy group and m is 0-4 but excluding SiH 4 ; II, an organo aluminium compound and III, acycloheptatriene compound. The olefin may be ethylene, propylene or butene or mixtures thereof. The TiCl 3 may be prepared by reduction of TiCl 4 with, e.g. H 2 , Ti or a silicon compound. The organo aluminium compound may be the product of reacting an aluminium hydride or organo compound with a diene. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or in the presence of an solvent. Extensive lists of cycloheptatriene compounds are specified and claimed including tropones, tropolones, and tropylium salts. In the examples propylene is polymerized in the presence of polypropylene and in the presence or absence of hydrogen using a catalyst in which I is TiCl 3 , produced by reduction of TiCl 4 with Ti, which has been milled with TeCl 4 , SiCl 4 , CCl 4 , hexachlorocyclopentadiene, hexachlorobenzene, 1,5- dichloropentane or benzyl chloride, II is AlEt 3 or AlEt 2 Cl and III is tropylium tetrachloride aluminate, methyltropyl ether, tropyl chloropentene, tropyl chlorocyclopentene, N,N-dimethyl amino tropylidene, methoxyethyl tropylether, ditropyl or tropone or in comparative examples hexamethyl phosphortriamide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,336,319.
