摘要： A method for communicating update meta data corresponding to a software update from an update source computer using a tag-based structure is disclosed. The method comprises receiving an identifier element that uniquely identifies the software update. After the identifier element is received at least one of the following additional elements is then received: a properties element storing general property information relating the software update that includes update handler information identifying an update handler for installing the identified software update. a localized properties element for storing language specific information directed to a computer user relating to the software update; a relationship element storing relationships the software update has to other software updates available for installation on a computer; a file element identifying the identified software update's payload and information relating to the software update's payload and a handler element storing information for executing the update handler identified in the property elements for installing the identified software update. The at least one additional element describes aspects of the identified software update for determining the value and applicability of the identified software update such that communication resources may be preserved in not obtaining the identified software update's payload if the identified software update is of no value or inapplicable for installation on a computing system.
