Class 137 In a fume cupboard in which an extra duct D serves to discharge the gaseous contents of a chamber C to atmosphere a nozzle 2 in the duct D is connected to a source of high pressure air, such as a pipe 1, to induce a flow of the gaseous contents when so required. The chamber C has an inspection shutter S mounted in guides B and has a slot 12 in a false bottom 8 to provide a secondary flow of air (from a high pressure box 9) supplied through the pipes 1 1 and 1 across the shutter opening to create a front curtain between the chamber's interior and exterior, or has air entering from a partly or generally perforated false bottom. The box 9 may be connected instead to a fan collecting air through a duct from other parts of the building. There may be a drip tray underneath the perforations or the floor of the box may be at an angle so that liquid runs off into a gully. In a modification the cupboard has a false ceiling with an opening for the gases, the top is bell-shaped, and in the pressure box is a sparge pipe for washing down. Outside air may be supplied to the nozzle and box 9.
