    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp having wide discharging space and a stable discharging path without meandering, capable of obtaining uniform light emitting property, which can be adjusted so as to eliminate unevenness of brightness, and to provide a backlight unit using smaller number of discharge lamps than before without lowering brightness.
      SOLUTION: The discharge lamp is composed of a container 101 made of glass, discharge gas sealed in a plurality of discharging spaces, and plural sets of electrodes (102a, 103a, 104a), (102b, 103b, 104b), (102c, 103c, 104c), (102d, 103d, 104d) individually generating discharge at every plurality of discharging spaces. The plurality of discharging spaces are communicated with each other through passages narrower than the discharging space, and discharge gas is shared by the discharge lamps. The backlight unit provided with those discharge lamp is provided.

      SOLUTION: This backlight unit is provided with an external electrode fluorescent lamp 20 in a cabinet. This external electrode fluorescent lamp 20 is provided with electrodes 31, 32 at the outer peripheries of both end parts of a glass bulb 21 having a discharge space 25 inside, and inside the glass bulb 21, a protective layer 22 and a phosphor layer 23 are formed in this order from the inner face side of the glass bulb 21. The glass bulb 21 is constituted of soda glass, and in a region which is the inner face of the glass bulb 21 and in which the protective layer 22 is not formed, sodium oxide precipitated from the soda glass is present in a state that it is exposed to a discharge space 25.
