    • 925,590. Fluid-actuated valves. MASTABAR MINING EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. May 15, 1959 [May 22, 1958; April 22, 1959], Nos. 16413/58 and 13690/59. Class 135. An excess pressure-relief valve in an hydraulic pit prop comprises a valve member carried on the forward end face of a piston and urged towards its seat by a spring and liquid trapped in a substantially closed chamber having one end wall formed by the opposite face of the piston and flowrestricting means downstream of the valve seat which on unseating of the valve member causes a build-up of pressure on the piston, rapid opening of the valve and a back pressure impulse acting on the rear face of the piston to assist the return of the valve member to its seat. As shown in Fig. 2 of the first Provisional Specification, a ball valve 18, carried by a stepped piston 22, 24 slidable with small clearances in bores 14, 15 and loaded by a spring 20, on being unseated allows restricted flow to an outlet 30. Pressure then builds up between the seat 16 and the forward face of the piston to cause rapid opening of the valve and a back-pressure impulse on the liquid already trapped in a substantially closed chamber 26 so that when the pressure at the valve inlet 12 falls the ball valve 18 is immediately reseated. As shown in Fig. 1 of the second Provisional Specification a loose ball valve 22 is carried by a piston 24 loaded by a spring 26. A chamber 12 behind the piston communicates through a bore 30 with an annular space between the housing 10 and the pit prop in which it is fitted. The space is limited by sealing rings 32, 34 to provide an auxiliary air chamber in which the air is compressed on the opening of the valve 22. The seat in this case is formed on a displaceable bush 16 sealed with respect to the housing and formed externally with a restricted passage leading to the outlet port 28. In a modification to the previous embodiment the outlet port and valve seat are adjacent each other and the restriction downstream of the seat is provided by the clearance between the valve housing and the pit prop. Specification 899,122 is referred to.

    • 902,188. Hydraulic pit props. MASTABAR MINING EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. March 27, 1961 [April 9, 1960; April 19, 1960], Nos. 12705/60 and 13580/60. Class 20 (2). In an hydraulic pit-prop comprising telescopic members 10, 12 incorporating a differential reciprocating pump unit 42, 44, the pump on the down stroke feeds pressure fluid from a cylinder 40 through a valve 74 to the underside of the ram 30, 32 of the cylinder 12 whilst on the up stroke it feeds fluid from the reservoir 12 to the cylinder 40 through valve-controlled inlet means 76, 78, 80. The connecting rod of the pump is detachably connected to a rockable spindle which is positioned by a removable pin engaging a groove therein and is journalled in a sleeve secured transversely to the member 12. The piston 42 is rendered inoperative when the prop engages the mine roof and the highpressure piston 44 cuts out at a pressure determined by an adjustable valve 52. The prop is provided with a relief valve in a capsule 82, a breather valve, in Fig. 1 (not shown), and a release valve 32 adapted to be opened by a plunger 90 when depressed by the piston 42 under suitable positioning of the pump handle. The base 14 is secured to the member 10 by a bolt 13 to permit access to the ram or is welded thereto, see Fig. 4 (not shown). Specification 898,987 is referred to.
