    • A method for transmitting a subchannel availability for an uplink (UL) multi-user (MU) transmission is described. An availability of one or more subchannels of an orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) channel are determined by a first communication device for the UL MU transmission. A High Throughput (HT) Control field of a media access control (MAC) header that includes an indication of the determined availability of the one or more subchannels is generated by the first communication device. A MAC protocol data unit (MPDU) that includes the HT Control field is generated by the first communication device. The MPDU is transmitted by the first communication device to a second communication device via the OFDM channel for a subsequent allocation of radio resources for the UL MU transmission by the second communication device.

    • A communication device determines, in connection with a prior uplink multi- user (UL MU) communication in which the communication device participated, whether the communication device is to use one or more first channel access parameters, or one or more second channel access parameters for accessing a communication medium for a single user (SU) transmission by the communication device, where using the one or more first channel access parameters is associated with a greater probability of obtaining access to the communication medium as compared to using the one or more second channel access parameters. Depending on the determination made, the communication device uses the one or more first channel access parameters, or the one or more second channel access parameters to attempt to access the communication medium. In response to accessing the communication medium, the communication device transmits the SU transmission via the communication medium.

    • A method is described. A block allocation that indicates a plurality of contiguous tone blocks of a wireless local area network communication channel is selected for a multi-user, multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) data unit. A contiguous tone block corresponds to a respective device set having at least one communication device. Respective spatial stream allocations are selected, for at least some of the blocks, that indicate a number of spatial streams for the corresponding block of the data unit. The number of streams of a block is equal to a number of communication devices of the device set that corresponds to the block. A first field is encoded and transmitted to indicate the selected block allocation and the selected spatial stream allocations. A second field is encoded and transmitted to indicate a respective device identifier for each communication device of the respective device sets.

    • A physical layer (PHY) preamble of a multi-user (MU) PHY data unit is generated. The PHY preamble is generated to include formatting information regarding the MU PHY data unit, including a field to be transmitted within a first individual communication channel among a plurality of individual communication channels that collectively span a bandwidth of a composite channel, each individual communication channel including a plurality of basic resource allocation (RA) units that collectively span a bandwidth of the individual communication channel. The field is generated to indicate one or more groupings of basic RA units, wherein at least one of the one or more groupings of basic RA which includes basic RA units of one or more other individual communication channels. A data portion of the MU PHY data unit is generated according to the formatting information in the PHY preamble, and the MU PHY data unit is generated to include the PHY preamble and the data portion.
