    • An instrumentation system estimates characteristics of a decentralized network, such as: the size, growth rate, and growth acceleration of the network; the number of instances, the rate of propagation, and the acceleration of propagation of a file in the network; and the search and download activities, in the aggregate and for particular files, in the network. A data center in the instrumentation system performs a set of interrelated methods for inferring these and other characteristics of the network. For estimating some characteristics, it identifies and uses a subset of the network, and uses information from the subset to infer or obtain information of the entire network. For estimating other characteristics, it deploys software agents to masquerade as nodes in the network.

    • 2035. Patterson, J. Feb. 1. Steering-engines.-Relates to the construction of steering-gear provided with means for preventing strains due to heavy seas striking the rudder. Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan of one form of gear. To the rudder head is secured a toothed sector gearing with a pinion B' loosely mounted on a vertical shaft, and formed integral with, or secured to, an internal gear-wheel B . Above is loosely mounted a worm-wheel E, which carries four loose pinions gearing with the wheel B and with a pinion D secured to the vertical shaft. This worm-wheel is driven in the manner shown from the engine G. On the upper end of the vertical shaft is a crank-disc driving a pair of pumps J , J , which under ordinary conditions, owing to the loading of their discharge valves, offer sufficient resistance to prevent the shaft from rotating. Should a heavy sea strike the rudder, the shaft is rotated and damage to the engine or gear prevented. Teeth L on the outer periphery of the wheel B gear with a pinion M, through which the spindle N of the controlling-valve of the engine is rotated. Or the controlling-valve may be actuated from any other part moving with the rudder. In a modification, bevel gear is substituted for the spur gear shown.
