Class 146(3) A refillable ball-point pen has an air passage to the reservoir through the nib section, and there is a hard-wearing seating for the ball which may comprise a natural or artificial hard gem or "Monel" (R.T.M.) metal. As shown, the ball housing 10 is made of "Monel" metal or brass, and the seating 12 is of square section made from a natural or artificial gem, e.g. sapphire, ruby or spinel, and shaped to the contour of a 1 mm. diameter ball 13. In a modification, the entire ball housing 10. with an integral ball seating, is made of "Monel" metal. A silver or stainless steel feed tube 14 is pushed into the ball housing after the ball 13 is fitted therein, and the shank 15 of the housing pressed oval with the tube 14 in the centre; as the bore of the shank 15 is slightly larger then the outside diameter of the tube 14, two auxiliary feed holes will be formed, one on each side of the feed tube. Alternatively, a resilient plastic feed member, having a half-round cross-section, can be pushed into the shank 15 which is not deformed. The housing 10 is then fitted into a plastic feed section 16 having an external thread in which is cut a helical air intake groove 17, and the section 16 is screwed into an adaptor 18 carrying an ink sac 19. A hood 21 is screwed over the adaptor 18, leaving an annular space 20 around the section 16, and the whole assembly is then screwed into a barrel 22 having a lever 23 for collapsing the sac 19. A similar assembly without the sac 19 can be used, in which case the pen is filled by a "pumping" bottle &c. The annular space 20 serves as an overflow chamber. If an acid ink is used, a wetting agent is added together with a hydroscopic agent to prevent the ink from drying out inside the pen. Specification 611,119 is ' referred to.
