    • A valve (e.g., gate or ball) having a sealing assembly including a rigid annular seat member and annular sealing means carried by the same. The resilient material of the sealing means is locked in place by lip portions that are bent or rolled over during manufacture. In a preferred embodiment the sealing means consists of a first assembly comprising a seal ring made of relatively hard resilient material (like nylon) an an annulus of more resilient material maintained in radial compression, together with another annular insert of resilient material which is concentric with the first assembly.

    • A valve having at least one sealing assembly comprising a metal seat ring carried by the valve body and urged toward the valve member by circumferentially disposed coil springs. The springs are disposed within an annular retainer formed of resilient material that is U-shaped in section and which seats within the body recess. The seat ring is sealed with respect to the body and carries resilient means for sealing with respect to the valve working surface of the valve member. Preferably means is provided for injecting a viscous sealant into a region adjacent the sealing means, and means isalso provided for confining the viscous sealant to this region.

    • A ball valve that is suitable for large pipe sizes (e.g., 20-40 inches or larger). The body is fabricated by welding from mill steel shapes (e.g., plate steel). The main pressure-retaining part of the body is a generally cylindrical shell made from a plurality of segments welded together. At least one and preferably two of the segments are flat plates which are welded to one or two cylindrical segments. The flat plate or plates serve to mount bearing means for journalling the ball. One of the end portions of the body for making connection with associated piping includes an annulus secured to one end of the shell, together with a conical shaped section and a pipe section connected between the annulus and the small end of the conical section. The annulus serves to mount a sealing assembly for the valve.

    • A meter prover apparatus and method of the type making use of a metering pipe and an interchange connecting the ends of the pipe which uses a piston-like plunger having sealing means which fit into a launching sleeve interposed in the interchange, the spheres being successively moved through the sleeve and launched into the metering pipe by reciprocation of the plunger. The complete cycle is carried out in such a manner as to avoid jamming of spheres in the interchange. At the beginning and during a prover run leakage past the plunger is detected by reference to the pressure differential between the line and the space between the plunger sealing means. Also the seal integrity of each sphere can be checked to insure absence of fluid bypass about the sphere during a run.

    • A meter prover apparatus and method making use of a metering pipe and an interchange connecting the ends of the pipe. The interchange is characterized by use of a piston-like plunger which fits into a sleeve or barrel interposed in the interchange. Spheres are successively moved through the sleeve and launched into the metering pipe by reciprocation of the plunger. During a meter proving run the plunger is within the barrel and forms an interchange seal. Means can be provided to detect any leakage of liquid past the plunger seal, and also past a sphere which is adjacent to the plunger. In one embodiment the apparatus is arranged with an electrical system for automatic cycling.

    • A valve construction (gate or ball) having at least one sealing assembly which normally provides a fluid-tight seal between the body and the valve surface of the gate or ball. The sealing assembly includes a metal ring having sealing means formed of resilient material which engages the valve surface. The ring can be jacked hydraulically against the valve surface to establish a secondary seal. During periods when jacking forces are not applied, the assembly presents a fluid pressure area acted upon by the upstream line pressure whereby the sealing means is urged by line pressure against the valve surface. One embodiment has means for introducing sealing lubricant to the sealing areas of the valve surface. Also one embodiment has means for detecting leakage past the sealing assembly.

    • Sphere handling apparatus for use with pipe lines carrying fluid under pressure and serving to introduce or remove a sphere or other clean-out device. It makes use of an inclined hollow body connected to the line and adapted to contain a sphere. The interior of the body is divided into two spaces that are separated by a closure movable by power means between closed and open positions for enabling the two spaces to be sealed with respect to each other or to be placed in communication to enable a sphere to move from one space to the other. The closure is sealed with respect to a sleeve that forms a part of the body and is disposed intermediate the two spaces. Preferably bypass means is provided to enable an operator to connect the two spaces for pressure equalization. Also means is provided for detecting leakage past the closure. Preferably the sealing means between the closure and the sleeve is of the double resilient cup type. One embodiment is used for launching and another for retrieving spheres.
