    • The present invention provides a method is provided for soft vertical handovers. The method includes requesting a handover from a first wireless network that operates according to a first protocol to a second wireless network that operates according to a second protocol, the first protocol being different than the second protocol, via a first wireless telecommunication link that operates according to the first protocol. The method also includes forming, in response to the handover request, a second wireless telecommunications link according to the first and second protocols, the second wireless telecommunications link being concurrent with the first wireless telecommunication link. The method further includes dropping the first wireless telecommunications link after forming the second wireless telecommunications link.

    • The present invention provides a method for transmitting voice packet data over a selected one of a first network in which multiple devices belonging to a defined set communicate with each other according to a first protocol and a second network in which multiple devices communicate with each other according to a second protocol, different from the first protocol. The method includes establishing at least one radio bearer between at least two devices in the first network according to the first protocol, receiving at least one voice packet that conforms to the second protocol, modifying the at least one voice packet to conform to the first and the second protocols, and transmitting the at least one modified voice packet using the at least one radio bearer.

    • The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for using a bidding strategy to select a bid price for at least one of goods and services in an auction of wireless communication access requests within a marketplace of sellers and buyers to obtain a profit gain in that auction. A communications system may include a broker to select a bid price in response to a service request from a mobile communication device to an operator including a bidding algorithm for bidding a price in an auction. At an operator, a bidding algorithm, in accordance with one embodiment, may provide or use a robust, adaptive bidding strategy that may maximize the profit gain in a bidding process by assuming one of at least two forms for a probability of winning as a function of a bid price and through the use of a set of mixed strategies. The bidding strategy may identify a form, for the probability of winning, that may be currently prevalent and determine one or more parameter values defining a probability function based on the identified form. Using a state machine for a bidder's strategy, the bidding algorithm may provide a trade-off between optimizing the revenue and investigating the current conditions in the marketplace.

    • A technique for delivering communications services to a large number of users employing relatively inexpensive, widely available handsets. More particularly, the technique utilizes a network apparatus that supports individual access to a community of users and supports access to a wireless communications system (e.g., any well-known Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless network). That is, the communications hub functions similar to a communications switch with a number users employing inexpensive handsets (e.g., well-known 900 MHz cordless telephones) on one side and the functionality of a mobile terminal, and CDMA interconnection, on the other side. Therefore, the users (i.e., subscribers) employ relatively inexpensive, widely available handsets, in conjunction with the network apparatus, to access a wireless communications network and the associated communications services offered from the wireless service provider.
